ive read a million threads about format, price, speed, limitations etc...my main use would be for transfering vhs tapes to dvd and for back up and storage ( mosty dig. pictures that are eating up lots of hard drive ) price isnt really an issue since its a gift😀 as far as format i guess its anyone's guess but im leaning towards r+/rw+ unless i can get the sony burner that covers the r-/rw- format as well. speed isnt a real big issue as im a fairly patient person...

any comments would be appreciated

see my sig for my DVD burner.

I really like the use of DVD-RW for my backups of files, but it takes a while to burn. If you have less than 5 gig of stuff that you back up, I would stick with regular high speed CD-RW. If more than that, I LOVE my DVD burner.

budman..i love your thinkin😀 kartajan i have about 15gig worth of stuff so i really like the idea of 4-5 dvd's rather that 15-20 cdr's

15~20 cd's is only going to set you back ~6.00 or so, and you probably have a cdrw already. 🙂

The Sony drive is very popular since it combines both +&- formats in a single drive, but the availability is low due to the extreme popularity of the drive. I am considering the Sony for my personal machine, but I think I will hold off for another month or two.

yea the cdr media is cheaper but my main reason for wanting one is to put my home vhs tapes on dvd and i really like the idea of editing them ( my daughter competes in gymnastics and i have about 30-40 tapes that i would like to store on dvd ) plus your normal xmas, birthday and wedding tapes

It is Christmas after all, so maybe you can splurge for the Sony Drive. 🙂

i guess the reason i really want one now is that its going to be a gift😀 so i guess i was seeing if there was a reason not to get one and maybe get something else like a BIG monitor or a radeon 9700

The only problem with the Sony drive is the availability. You might want to start trying to hunt one down now if you plan on unwrapping it for Christmas. 🙂
