Should I get a distortion or effects pedal?

I have a Ibanez RG320QS and a Peavey Bandit 112 amp. The amp isn't very good I know, but do you guys think it would be beneficial to get a pedal? Like would it just give a better distortion than what the amp does? I am in to punk music.

Or should I just go with like a multieffects pedal? Would the distortion on that be as good as just a dist. pedal?

I think my max budget would be $100.

If you want pure, hardcore crunch(distortion)

get a Boss MetalZone. They're 110 - 125$. Very much worth the investment. :)

stay away from effects if you're playing punk. for punk, the ideal is setup is: guitar, cable, tube amp.

next best for you will be guitar, pedal, amp :) lots of people like the tube screamers but i've never heard one in person. the metal zone is good for super high-gain sounds (think mesa boogie i guess). for a more vintage sound, check out the big muff. i think that might be too smooth and dreamy for you though. remember that pedals, especially high gain ones like the metal zone, will make your sound mushy. it will be much harder to cut through drums and stuff.

Alright, so no on the multi effects.

I don't think I'd need a hardcore metal sound one, cause punk really doesn't have that sound often. I mean it's distorted but not like a hardcore crunch IMO.

And do you guys actually think a dist pedal would give noticeably better distortion over my amps?

Distortion pedals just give you different kinds of distortion. You can set it to make it sound like your amp's distortion, or more of a lighter sound, or more of a heavy, punk sound

I'd recommend the Ibanez SM7 Smashbox over the Boss Metalzone - I've had 2 friends both sell their MZ's after playing the SM7

A pedal should give a better distortion than an amp, unless it is a more expensive amp and is cranked up. My favorite is the ProCo Rat 2, it has a good cutting sound without being overly bassy/trebly.

If you're playing through a solid state amp, then yes you will notice a night and day difference. I think a tube amp is harder to compare with a pedal. I'd kill to have the tone of distortion the Peavey 5150 head puts out in a pedal.

Ehhh I don't know what a solid state amp is. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to that. What kind of amp is mine??

Does anyone else have any specific model recommendations? There's been several mentioned but I see no general consensus.

And preferably not too expensive! I was hoping for some cash for Christmas but I didn't get any so I'll have to come up with it somewhere.

you have a solid state amp. most amps below about $1000 are solid state, or sometimes hybrid amps with tube preamps.
