Should I get a Costco membership?

I'm moving much closer to a Costco next fall, and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a membership.

How much is it like Sam's, and how much is it different? Sam's seems pretty worthless to me since I don't have any roommates and don't need EVERYTHING in bulk, because they don't really sell normal supermarket -sized items. The only things I really eat in huge quantities are eggs and other breakfast foods.

I probably spend, on average, $60 a week on things like food and stuff. More if you factor in my energy drink addictions. But I also buy a lot of electronics. Would it be a useful investment?

Can you get added on if your parents already have a SAM's pass for 15 dollars extra a year I believe.

No. And I live to far from a Sam's now to make it worthwhile. And I specifically said that Sam's was useless to me, and I was wondering how much Costco was different than Sam's. If this is an attempt to hijack my thread....don't.

How much cheaper is stuff at costco than the same things at walmart?

Untrue. I'm a single guy with a Costco membership, and I have saved lots of money. I just don't go there as often as unsingle guys. :)

Sams vs Costco, they're about the same except for a few items.

For a single person like you, I don't know. I'm single, and I go to Sam's about once every month to stock up on cat food, litters, and sometimes for their cheap DVDs, cheap name brand clothing. Large box of candy bars (like Payday, or Snickers crunch bar).

lol, paranoid. I was just trying to make a suggestion even though you said SAM's was useless, it wouldn't be too much more to be added on. It wasn't an attempt to hijack anything.

I don't know anything about Sam's club, so can't comment on that.

I don't see how Costco could not be worth it.
It's only $50 a year and I saved that much just buying my TV.
There are so many things that are a good deal.
My wife buys hardcover books and saves about $10 on each book. 5 books in a year and the membership has payed for itself.

And just because you are single doesn't mean you can't buy in bulk. There are plenty of foods that are non-perishable or frozen that you can save a ton of money on.

I'm single and I have a card, part of my parents'.

I'd probably say it's worth it even if I was paying the full $35, I go about every 3-4weeks, fill up on gas, kitty litter and cat food, sodas, frozen foods, beer and wine depending on the state, dvds, cat stuff, toilet paper and paper towels (one package lasts me close to a year), ink cartridges, beruit cups (200 for $6), etc.

However, you may save just as much if you go around after sales but I usually don't like to do that for everyday stuff like food and drink.

I dig Sams. They usually have vid games at least $5 lower than everywhere else... then you can use that $5 to get a box of candybars or giant box of cereal!

When I lived with a roommate we bought our own stuff so it was like I was single and I thought Costco was well worth it.

Single or not getting their breads, meats, pizzas, etcera is worth it. They usually have good prices on stuff like bottled water and beer if that is your thing.
They have hot dogs/polish sausage and soda for $1.50 and you can hardly beat that.

I would say go for it.

One thing to consider is Costco's excellent return policy. You can recieve an unconditional refund on pretty much anything without a problem. Heck, their computer return policy allows you to return your computer any time up to 6 months from the time of purchase.

I'm not single but from the type of purchases I make, they would be similar if I were single. I'd say it's worth it.

has anyone actually ever tried out how lenient the return policy is at costco or sams club?

Just get people with membership to get you costco cash cards. Put $25 on each card. You can buy as much as you want and pay cash for the rest. So each card is like an entry pass.

Sam's and Costco have a lot of stuff thats just cheaper and you don't need to get bulk of but I don't know that if would be good for you still, my roommate has his own business where he services people's home PC's and he uses both Costco and Sam's to buy electronics, like power strips, Routers, hubs paper, etc.. for that you will save a good amount of money. but for every day things like soap or soemthing like that its just way over kill.

I appreciate the general consensus. I'll swing by when I move later and get a membership. $50 isn't all that much and isn't necesarily worth bugging people to give me gift cards every couple of weeks, seems like a lot of work to beat the system...

As previously mentioned, you'd probably find useful things like alcohol, computers, cell phones (Sprint), cds, dvds, and books. Other stuff that I often buy, and is manageable for single guy...

- big bag of trail mix
- bag of frozen mixed berries
- frozen dinners
- big boxes of cereal

I'll be 21 at the end of September, so I guess that's good. Considering I'll be moving in at the 3rd week of August. I'd only have a few more weeks of having to buy beer at sh!tty corner stores before I can save in bulk ;)
