Should I get a Best Buy PSP for my 930B purchase?

I will be buying a 930B from Best Buy soon and, believe it or not, I'm actually considering buying the PSP with it. Why? Because it's 3 years long, covers ANYTHING during that time period, e.g. backlight bleeding, the development of any dead pixels, etc., and with my discount only adds about $37 to the price, tax included.

Do you think this is worth it? If the monitor initially has no dead pixels, what are the chances it could develop one or more sometime in the future, even a year or two from now?

If it is a straight up replacement I WOULD get it..

And even if you get one dead pixel or so.. Hang on to the monitor for a year or so and exchange it for store credit towards something nicer at the time!

So you would definitely do it?

The only reason I'm considering it is because the return policy is only 14 days, after that I'd have to rely on Samsung's warranty for any problems. Which usually wouldn't be a problem, but in the case of an LCD it is, because Samsung will only replace it if it has 10 dead pixels or more. So if dead pixels develop down the road, I'm stuck. So what are really the chances that a dead pixel or two will develop AFTER the first two weeks of the monitor's life? It can happen, can't it?

I like getting the extended warranties on certain things.

I didn't get it on my LCD since i figured the three yr. manufacturer warranty is okay.

However, on stuff with straight exchange warranties, expecially peripherals, i think it's great.

E.g., my Leadtek 6800 GT died on me last week. After confirming the card was indeed gone, i headed over to the store where i bought it, & had a new BFG 6800 GT in a few minutes :)

To me, the convenience was well worth it.

I got a warranty like that on my Sony PSP. Like 10dead pixels and 3 bright pixels. Good thing I got the warranty.

I agree.. Certain things are better than others to have replacement plans on..

Video cards.. and such..

Even though the manufactor sometimes has a nice warranty, instant exchange just saves you a lot of hassle and down time.. Typically not to expensive either!

Well Samsung does give a three-year warranty on their LCD monitors, however they will only exchange one under warranty if it has 10 or more dead pixels. With the Best Buy PSP, if it has even one dead pixel, or any kind of backlighting issue, they'll either send it to service to be repaired or just give me a new one (usually the latter). However, they do give a 14-day return policy for all monitors.

So again, whether this plan is worth the money or not comes down to the chances of something happening AFTER the first 14 days that the Samsung warranty does NOT cover, e.g., a pixel dying after using the monitor for a few months. Can this happen? Can your monitor have 0 dead pixels at first but after a few weeks or months develop one?

I would read the PSP terms and conditions a little better before I bought it. While I'd buy it because it's a good investment to protect my product, points worth noting:

1) It is not direct replacement. It will only be replaced if Best Buy is unable to service it to factory spec.
2) Dead pixel coverage is not 'a single dead pixel = exchange' it's more like 3-4 or so in a square inch area = service.
3) Most valuable aspect: if BB can't fix it, they have to give you a new, comparable one. Usually that means you will at LEAST get what you paid for in terms of features, but more often than not you get an upgrade because the technology only gets better.

What you said is true, however I work there, and talked to a guy who worked at another store for years now. He said when people come in with a PSP on LCDs, they take it in for almost any problem, even one dead pixel, and almost always replace it and don't bother shipping it out to service.

Not true on the LCD's and service. I ran the tech bench at a Best Buy for about 6 months. It all depends on whether or not the manufacturer will service it. That is ther ONLY thing that determines if you get a new one right away or if you have to wait on the service center to call it junkout. Now if you manager wants to fudge the rules and loose their job, they can junk it out right there on the spot, but not a bright idea.

As far as the PSP goes, yeah, I got one on my monitor, even after I left BB I still get PSP's on certain things. Especially if the are DEVO.

But from your experience, would they send it to service for one dead pixel? My senior tells me they always do.

Bump.

The question: How likely is it for a pixel to die on an LCD after the initial two weeks of its life?
