Should I get 512 MB More Ram (up to 1GB)????

This will be my last upgrade to this sytem. Next stop will be virtually all new HW (except for Video Card I'd assume)

Anyways, this is primarily a gaming machine (BattleField 1942), along w/ some Pshop, etc. Will I see improvements?

Specs below.

Thanks for opinions.

Probably not. If those 2 things above is all you want to do stick with 512MB. If you want to play the latest games like Star Wars and Doom 2/HL2 with good visuals and smooth framerates go with 1024MB.

I hope you mean Doom III 😉

I would think that Photoshop would benefit with more RAM, especially if you deal with large images and/or many filters/effects etc. I have also heard, mostly here at the AT Forums, that BF1942 prefers and performs best on a PC with 1GB of RAM.

For most other things though, I doubt you will see much improvment. But, RAM is relatively inexpensive right now so why not? If you are saving for that new rig though, 512MB should be okay for the time being.

In the good ol' days with SDRAM you could install PC133 modules in a PC66/PC100 motherboard and it would be quite happy. Then if you bought a new motherboard with 133Mhz capability you could take the PC133 with you. This always seems a win win scenario, especially considering the negligable cost difference between PC66/PC100/PC133.

Can the same be done with DDR memory???

I ask because it seems a shame to buy a load of PC2100 and then buy a new motherboard in a few months time and have to buy new PC3200 memory (or whatever is around in x months time). I would consider putting that money towards a new mobo.

My god, you still are using sdram? You can't make the comparison with ddr ram because ddr ram murders sdram... also you don't have to buy pc3200. it is mostly for o/cers and the new p4 ... besides the performance gains justify pc2100 ram vs. say my Dual channel HyperX pc3500 ram.

Hey don't knock SDRAM - I've got a machine still running with EDO SIMMs. Now they're old - SDRAM is still used in many Pentium/ PII/ PIII and Athlon/ Duron machines.

I am running PC2100 in my WindowsXP machine but all other machines use SDRAM including my faithfull Duron 800 @ 933 /w 512Mb PC133.
