All these talks of cards really got me thinking of my computer upgrades to reach a near "nirvana" of performance.
It began as: Pentium3 550mhz (dual) with a Geforce256.
Then came:
0.7Ghz Athlon with Geforce2 GTS
1Ghzhz Athlon with Geforce2 GTS
1.53Ghz Athlon with Geforce3 Ti500
With the latest system I have, Quake3 runs at 120+fps at 10x7, with all details set to max. This system is now what I wanted in say.. 1999? Now that I have THIS system, I don't care for Quake3 AND the games built off Quake3 are definitely slower than 120fps at the same settings (max settings, etc). I can finally run Quake3 the way I wanted and yet I cannot run the games that are based from Quake3 at the same speed.
Talking to my friend about this, we both agree not to upgrade the video cards until we can get a card that'll run Doom3 at 100+fps (at 10x7 with all eye candy on). How long will that be for our upgrades? 2-3 generations of Nvidia cards, or 4+ generations of Nvidia cards (2+ years?). We are making leaps and bounds when it comes to the performance of video cards, but I so have to hold off my purchase of these cards and simply have to wait until Doom3 ships. After Doom3 ships, the top of the line card won't be king anymore and yet won't run Doom3 at the speed I want. Perhaps the cards, 2-4 generations after that top of the line will be along the lines of what I want.
Until then, I'll have to wait and see.
