Should I expect a price drop on Nvidia GF4 cards next week ?

With the release of ATI's Radeon 9700 next week (supposedly), is there any reason for me to hold out on buying a GF4 ti4200 now or should I wait for a drop in price?

The ATI card will directly compete with the GF4 4600. Since the ATI radeon 9700 will most likely romp the 4600 (read the inquirer 11,000 vs 15,000 3dmarks), I'd expect a price drop in the 4600. However, the 4200 is for a different audience (the budget gamers). Hence I doubt it will be effected. Furthermore, with the 4200 being available for 150-180 bucks (depending on manufacturer), I doubt it has anywhere to go as its probably bottomed out in price...Of course they could surprise us all and give it away for free but I doubt that ;)

PS: Any fanboys who are going to start going crazy and telling me about how 3dmark's hall of fame has 4600's in the 16,000 range should just save themselves the effort. I'm not going to argue with you. If the 9700 was oc'ed to the brink of insanity and coupled with a CPU OC'ed the same way I'm sure it will still beat the 4600 by a good 4,000 3dmarks...

Ahh ok, thanks antondorokhin... looks like I'll order the tigf4200 today or tomorrow. I assume that the Radeon 10000 is competing with Nvidia NV30?

My question is, does 3dmark mean anything??
My concern is with games (real life benchmarks), not benchmarking programs.

I always thought it was safe to assume that an increase in performance in a benchmark usually correlates to an increase in games as well.

antondorokhin i don't mind the ATI 9700 beating the GF4 ti 4600! It may be faster and look even better but heck my GF4 ti 4400 looks so good to me compared to the voodoo 3 2000 pci video card i had i don't know if i need anything faster or to look better. But hey that won't stop me from wanting a ATI 9700 hehe. I can not believe how good the N30 is going to be either. I sure hope the things about the N30 is true too. I just not going to like the prices of these video cards when they first come out :( I have to just hold myself from wanting a new video card already lol. I am sure all of us wants whatever new video card comes out even if we do have the GF4 ti series video card or a ATI 8500,etc. I been wanting a new video card when i had my voodoo 3 2000 pci video card. I wanted a GF2 Ultra but did not get it, i wanted a GF3 but did not get it, i wanted a GF3 ti 500 but did not get it, i finally got a GF4 ti 4400 like i wanted. The reason i got a GF4 ti 4400 if you might ask is because it can overclock to GF4 ti 4600 speeds easily and ever little percent faster could help in future games like doom3. But i will tell you one thing if your chipset on your mobo like via chipsets and a new video card you get does not like each other. Its sometimes heck to get them to work together. That goes for both nvidia and ATI because both have their fair share of problems. Each brand has a different weak point.

Yeah, I try to do the same thing... hold on to one card for as long as I can. I had the TNT for a while before I got my GF2GTS a couple months after it came out. Now I'm waiting for the R250. Another 6 months will have to pass before I make my next upgrade.

Prices might drop a little but probably not a lot for at least another month. I seriously doubt the 9700 will be able to be purchased for real delivery until the end of August or even September.

Personally, I've gone ahead and ordered a Gainward Ti4600, because it's the ONLY Nvidia card with dual DVI outs, and I need (want) that to run 2 LCDs that use DVI.

The early pictures show the ATI 9700 will still have just 1 DVI + 1 Analog. That's a shame. Cards need to start having 2 DVIs standard in my opinion.

Gf4200isdabest, I went from a TNT to GF4-Ti4600. So much better, but not all that I was hoping for.

3dmark roughly translates to game performance

i mean 5000 3dmarks vs 10K 3d marks

i think its easy to tell

GF1 < GF2 < GF3/ Radeon 8500 < GF 4 in performance in real world games

GF1 < GF2 < GF3/ Radeon 8500 < GF 4 also applies in 3dmark

Definitely not necessarily. My 8500 system scored significantly higher than my GF3 system in 3dMark, yet the GF3 system runs certain games (Dungeon Siege, RTCW, MOHAA, etc...) MUCH better.

All these talks of cards really got me thinking of my computer upgrades to reach a near "nirvana" of performance.

It began as: Pentium3 550mhz (dual) with a Geforce256.
Then came:
0.7Ghz Athlon with Geforce2 GTS
1Ghzhz Athlon with Geforce2 GTS
1.53Ghz Athlon with Geforce3 Ti500

With the latest system I have, Quake3 runs at 120+fps at 10x7, with all details set to max. This system is now what I wanted in say.. 1999? Now that I have THIS system, I don't care for Quake3 AND the games built off Quake3 are definitely slower than 120fps at the same settings (max settings, etc). I can finally run Quake3 the way I wanted and yet I cannot run the games that are based from Quake3 at the same speed.

Talking to my friend about this, we both agree not to upgrade the video cards until we can get a card that'll run Doom3 at 100+fps (at 10x7 with all eye candy on). How long will that be for our upgrades? 2-3 generations of Nvidia cards, or 4+ generations of Nvidia cards (2+ years?). We are making leaps and bounds when it comes to the performance of video cards, but I so have to hold off my purchase of these cards and simply have to wait until Doom3 ships. After Doom3 ships, the top of the line card won't be king anymore and yet won't run Doom3 at the speed I want. Perhaps the cards, 2-4 generations after that top of the line will be along the lines of what I want.

Until then, I'll have to wait and see.

imtim83:

You should always feel free to upgrade to the latest and greatest stuff.

Just sell your old stuff at a nice price in the for sale/trade forums and everyone will be happy :p

Vinny_N i am not. Just mad that my GF4 ti 4400 video card is still freezing up on me even in games now. But not as bad as it was. I am going to try to fix it. Not giving up because i can't.
