Should I even try Oblivion on my old system?

So I'm dying to play Oblivion, but sadly time has passed my system by. It's very modest, AMD Athlon XP 2400, 512 MB of PC3200 dual channel, Radeon 9700 Pro. Somehow I don't think that will handle the game very well. Right now about the only upgrade I can afford is going up to 1 GB of ram. If I do that, will it be playable on my system?

If not, I'll just wait until i can afford an Xbox 360 (who knows when that will be) and play it on a 51" widescreen HDTV.

You'll be able to play it, though most likely on the lowest settings @ 800x600. Probably will still be a bit choppy. Upgrading the RAM won't help much. The limiting factor is your video card as that's pretty much the bear minimum card to run the game (actually the 9500/9600 for ATI, but close enough). You'd want to upgrade that first and foremost.

I'm playing on a P4 2.6, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9600 Pro @ 800x600 with low video settings.

Yep, it's choppy. Don't expect beauty that others are describing. At first, I thought I wouldn't be able to play through with it but I'm not level 5 and been playing it through the week.

Ouch, maybe I'll pass. I'd at least like to play it on my flat panel's default res, 1280x1024. Oh well, I'll save for the Xbox and play it on a 51" HDTV.
