Should I dump my 17' for a 21'? ----POLL----

I currently have a: Samsung SyncMaster 753DF 17'

I was thinking about buying a: Sony Trinitron 21'

The problem is that the Trinitron will only do 70hz at 1024x768 (what I will be playing games at). But, the 17' does 85hz at 1024x768.

Will it affect how my gaming looks? Or will the larger screen more than make up for the short fall of the refresh rate?

SETUP:
AMD XP-M 2400+ @3200 speeds
9800pro
SB audigy 2
Abit NF7
500watt power supply
120gig hard drive.

Thanks for your input!

70hz (!) 😛 . . . . try lowering the resolution on your Samsung and see if your eyes can stand it (try it for an hour or two, gaming) . . . . . you will answer your own question 😉

I did try it, and yes... my eyes did hurt. I was told it "Looks better on a bigger screen" from the guy selling it. So you are saying I will get the same effect on the larger screen?

I keep my monitor at 85hz, and if i install a new driver or something happens that switches it to 60hz or even 75hz i definatly notice it as i get a massive headache and then go crap i forgot to switch it back to 85.

Ya, me too. But the 21 inch won't do 85 hz 🙁 . Will its size make it irrelivent that it doesn't do 85hz? Or give me a bigger headache?

Bigger headache, I imagine. I'm looking to upgrade from a 17" CRT to a 21"/22" CRT myself...just trying to find one reasonably cheap. 😛

Edit: I have the 753DF right now just like you do. 🙂

(I remember when it used to seem big....🙁)

Who voted 'yes'?. . . . someone doesn't like you 😛

😀

every one wants a bigger one

edit . . . j/k'ing of course . . . . either they are blind or mistook reading LCD for CRT.
😀

What 21" only does 70Hz @ 1024x768?
My old 1996 21" monitor did 120Hz @ 1024x768
Try to see if it does anything higher than what he said.

Yeah the resolution and refresh rate both suck.

Also for gaming, refresh rate will limit how much fps you can get. You can't get more fps than your refresh rate. The system will output more, but the monitor won't show it. So with only 70hz, you'd only get a max of 70fps. Not bad of course, perfectly playable in any game. Heck, aren't movies played at 30fps?

70hz

My old 21' did 120hz @ 12x10. I miss that monitor :brokenheart: It died in a rainstorm, damn leaky roof

Turn Vsync off...

NEITHER

19" offers best comprimise. $300 for DP930 vs double that for a 21/22 for only 20% more veiw.

Is the Sony a very old monitor? (Model name?) the refresh rate sounds extremely low. Anything lower than 85Hz annoys me greatly and should be avoided IMHO.

It is an HP rebadge monitor, it is apparently a year old. I totally agree that 70 hz is very poor considering both my 17' monitors do 85 hz.

EDIT: Oh, and I am one of those crazy people who always turns Vsync on because it looks smoother, so this wouldn't work well 🙁 .

The is no way 21" Trinitron only does max 70Hz at 1024x768. No way. Even if this monior is like 10 years old which you wouldn't want anyway, it'll do higher than 70Hz at 1024x768. FYI, my 21" Sony G520P does 150Hz max at 1024x768.

Give me the model name and number and I'll tell you what it can do. It's likely some kind of driver problem.

Well, I was going to buy it for 160. And the guy I was talking to about it said "It didn't like 85hz." Mabye the monitor is screwy or something. Because I completely agree that it should do >100hz easy. 70hz at 1200x1600 mabye. I don't know the exact model number. He gave it to me yesterday, but I forget it.

lemme jump in as a monitor newb:

My 17" NEC MuliSync does a max of 75hz refresh rate. Is this crap? I thought I was done spending for a while (wll i am whether i like it or not). doh

Don't worry Cawchy, I'm with you there. I've got to have Vsync on during gaming because it drives me crazy without it on. The game somehow "feels" smoother in playability. It's weird, but it makes me happy, so I won't argue with myself....which would be weird to begin with 😀
