Should I drive from the Bay Area to LA tomorrow?

Was planning to drive to LA to visit some friends but the storm is making me rethink the trip. I am really only worried about them closing I-5 over the Grapevine on Sunday if it decides to snow. Snow was expected earlier this week but I can't seem to find any great weather reports for the Grapevine area. Does anyone know what city I can search on Weather.com to get a good idea?

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....last time I tried this stunt, they shut down the 5N because a big rig exploded along with a few other cars. All because of the rain.

Good luck!

It's California, and it's raining I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

weather.com sucks more weener than a gay prostitute.

www.wrh.noaa.gov FTW

Edit: A quick glance shows snow levels will likely be at 4500-5500 feet-ish. I don't know how high I5 goes, but I kinda doubt if its that high.

Unless you plan on 20 hours (at least) worth of driving, I wouldn't recommend it.

It gets up to about 4200ft above sea level so he'd be right in the snow zone. I'd definitely avoid that area this weekend.

Edit-If you have chains and your car is in decent shape I might brave it if necessary but otherwise I'd just stay home. That's a hell of a long drive and with the weather predicted for this weekend I'd really not recommend that drive. I used to drive from Rochester to Albany, NY a couple times a month and that was only 200 miles. You're talking about twice that with bad weather and the possibility of snow. It's just not worth it. At the very least it's going to take you nearly twice as long on both routes.

I live in Los Angeles and when it rains I wouldn't even drive out of my drive way. I would think twice about the trip if I were you.

I wouldn't do it if it was dry but that's because I hate driving. Definitely wouldn't do it this weekend though. I literally saw waves breaking on the streets of LA while driving home from work today. And it's supposed to rain continously for 2 more days...

It is really windy in San Diego right now and we have rain predicted for most of the weekend. I'm kind of looking forward to it...but then again, I'm not traveling in it. :D

Funny you should say that.

It's interesting to note that my town in Nor Cal gets more rain on average every year than your town in WA. :) Don't tell us about rain! You get a little all the time. We get it in buckets in a short time.

Yeah, I'm sure you'd set out on a 4+ hour drive to visit friends with a heavy storm moving in with the possibility of snow on part of your route and heavy traffic knowing you'd have to turn around and do the reverse on Sunday...

Even if you would, would you recommend the same course of action to someone you cared about?

I have no problem driving in the rain or snow but that's a long distance and if you don't have to do it then why risk it?

Edit-I've driven from Buffalo NY to Rochester in a bad snow storm which is only 60 miles and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone. He'd be driving through a mountain pass that is known for bad weather and being closed completely during heavy snow not to mention the hours of driving through heavy rain...if the forecasts are to be believed anyway.

That's surprising. Ukiah has a larger average rainfall amount than Bellingham. Insert foot in mouth. But then again, Ukiah is well north in CA.

How on earth did my statement relate anywhere to driving in the rain. I was just commenting on how people in CA talk about rain. Get a drink will ya?

And actually, I have driven down to PDX which is roughly five hours South of here in the same conditions and drove back one day later. Take a Chill pill.

As much as I dislike the rain I actually enjoyed listening to it today.

Trip is off... I guess I will sit around and finish Bioshock.

Now that I don't have to get a good night sleep I guess the next big question is what to start with... some beer or go straight to the Glen Fiddich.

I'd agree with you on how people in CA talk about driving in the rain but that's not what this thread is about.

<--Off to pour another martini. :p

Nice! I love listening to the rain. My wind chimes are going off right now in anticipation of the storm that's blowing in. We had heavy clouds earlier but I'm just waiting for the rain.

Enjoy the Glenfiddich.
