Should I donate books to the library or charity?

I was cleaning up my room earlier today and realized that I need to clean my bookshelf of all the books I will never reread so I can make room for my other books. I'm thinking about giving them away, but I'm not sure whether I should donate them to the local library or to one of those charities that collect stuff behind the supermarket where I live (I think it's the Salvation army... not sure.) Which place do you guys think it would be better to donate my books to?

If the library wants them, I'd say that they are the worthier institution. Used books would bring in a pittance at a thrift store, while they could see years of use in a library(also, some libraries use booksales of donated material to raise funds). It would probably be good to check with the library first, though. Depending on the books and on their collection, they may or may not have a place for them.
