Hi,
I have a friend with an Opteron 146 that just got an FX51, and he has offered to trade me his old Opteron 146 for my A64 3000+ plus a little cash. Should I do it?

Thanks

Yeah, I probably would. My A64 is a socket 754. Disregarding the motherboard change, should I do it?

I myself would not bother, it's too much hassle.

and that requires a hard to find 940 mobo..

Also, besides having to get a socket 940 mobo, you will also have to invest in registered RAM. Opterons do not work with unregistered memory, so you wouldn't be able to use the RAM you are currently using with your 3000+. That's alot of cash to invest for very little, if any, performance gain.

I should have mentioned that too, the 940 platform wants registered RAM, another thing to add to the hassle list :p

Mloot is correct. S940 mobos require registered ram, and as far as I know, Kingston does not manufacture any registered Hyper-X modules.

Whats the difference between registered and unregistered ram?

I want to do this mainly because I HATE my MSI K8N Neo Platinum. It's been nothing but trouble for me. Since I'm not doing this, I'm probably going to get a DFI Lanparty UT.

The Neo2 Platinum is definitely a very picky board. But once you get it set up, it should run great. What kind of problems are you having?

I have a regular Neo, not a neo 2. The only problem I'm having right now is a slight graphics flicker every 15 mins or so, and this is my second one. My first one didnt like running my 9600 pro on agp 8x, and the onboard sound crackled, then one day it died.

Just say with what you have and yes, the DFI is a nice board, MSI K8T Neo doesn't overclock for shit, thats all I can tell you, other than that, I had no problems with my old MSI.
