Should I disregard my initial cat breed preference and just get a kitten at the best price?

I assume every person on here who is railing on Naer for not wanting to adopt a kitten has either adopted children or no children at all. Everyone else is a disgusting, unethical hypocrite.
Why would I want to adopt a child? They're ugly and they smell bad.

Don't understand. So lets say I railed at Naer for not wanting to adopt and I adopted children or had no children at all I would be a disgusting, unethical hypocrite?

I don't get the connection

You Sir, are every person's double barreled nightmare . . . a Bad Herr Kutz AND a big blowhard fronting faulty logic a reasonably smart 10 year old could demolish.

I once attended a public hearing for a new open pit copper mine. A gentleman offered that either we support this mine or that we support abortion. It's like that.

I have a box from some speaker stands and a shoebox that the cats have claimed as their beds. Most boxes they get bored of fairly quickly, but those two have had staying power.

Just get a shelter cat, they're awesome and will love you forever.

Also: Maine Coons don't really look like that, that looks more like what an artist wished his cat looked like. Don't get me wrong, my Maine my excellent compatriot is awesome, but he doesn't look like a lion/lynx cross breed. He also gets shit stuck in his fur if he's being lazy about cleaning.

Will this cat uplift my mood somehow being around it? Not unhappy or anything, just curious if this animal will bring be joy separate from my stable mental health

Why on Earth would anyone buy a cat? Ask around, millions of people are giving them away for free. Heck, do a little work and you can probably find someone willing to pay you to take theirs off their hands.

I'm hearing a division in opinions, some says it's a really great thing, others tones imply that it really isn't that great, as per example gaghalf.

might just get a desk betta fish

If cat ownership was so great, why are there so many unwanted cats?

Cats are awesome but I don't recommend getting one unless you know you really want one.

  • Cats take time; they want to be with you.
  • Cats take work. Ignore your cat and you end up with a bad cat.
  • Cats are expensive. Plan on $500 up front no matter how you obtain it. Plan on ~$50/month thereafter.
  • Want to travel? Cats can be left for a couple days but no longer without someone to come in to care for them.
  • Cats wreck everything. Okay, not everything, just everything they can possibly wreck.

It'll be fun to interact with, without being obnoxious like dogs (no dirty paws, slobber, or loud noise).
It'll offer idle amusement (my cat liked to jump up on window screens outside to get us to let her in).
You'll enjoy handling a soft furry object (so fuzzable).
And it's nice to be welcomed home (probably because your cat wants to go inside and get a nibble).

Unless you get a cat that's afraid of humans. Someone's used cat. :grimacing:
