The question reduces to this: Is it time to stop investing in a dead platform and move on to something new? Throwing money at AM2+ seems increasingly pointless.

It isn't pointless if it serves its purpose, and you don't have to throw much money at it. It isn't like fixing up an old car or something that is bound to break down no matter how many times that you fix it. Advantage of an older platform is that you can save some cash. Be smart.
