Should I close my windows during the day on a hot day?

So living in the Bay Area, and in a rather old house here, there's no air conditioning, and combined with 90+ degree temperatures makes for rather uncomfortable conditions. Right now, it's night time, and I'm leaving all the windows open and they'll remain closed throughout the night, but by morning should I continue to leave them open or closed? I will leave my blinds closed to keep all the sun light out, but what about the windows? Will the hot air seep in with them open, or will it be better to have as good and as much circulation as possibe?

Before we had a swamp cooler, the best way to cool off our house was run all the fans at night and close up the house by 7:00 in the morning, before the sun could really hit the front. Its better to keep the cool air in, and open up the house in the evening. Insulation works both ways, so I would suggest shutting everything in as soon as the sun rises.

I'm pulling this out of my @$$, so take this with a grain of salt.

I believe that you should keep them closed if I remember correctly. With the blinds down. The air is hotter on the outside of the house than on the inside on very hot days.

Oh yah, I forgot. Open them up in the evening/at night because then it should be cooler outside.

I try to close my windows everytime I walk away from the computer.

Okay, that's basically what I figured, I don't think I'll leave the fans on though with our little power problems here..
