i'm a law office's computer guy, and i just had a phone call for 20 minutes, all computer related (though most of it was for the office manager's personal computer at home she wants to buy). should i bill for it? and if so, how much? full $50 (i charge $50/hr to come in)? or partial?

If doing a favor like that for a manager can help your career, then I definately would NOT charge for it. Heck even if it appeared like a favor, I wouldn't do it. That is why you should tell people in advance - instead of hitting them with a surprize bill.

That said, its a lawyer. Go for it. Most of them are scum.

Is it routine for them to call you and you bill them for it? Or is getting called by them a rare event?

If you regularly get called by them, bill for it.

If you don't know what the proper procedure is there, I would find out first. Billing your manager probably won't make you a very popular person.

I wouldn't charge if this is the first time, but in the future, let them know that you'll be charging them before they start asking you for advice.

if you haven't been charging them for phone calls prior to know, this might blindside them. as important as it is to make money for your services, it would suck if you lost a client because you pissed them off.

I doubt you can bill for something unless you have at least a verbal contract with them for it. Did you warn them that you don't do phone consultation for free?

I don't get paid if my boss calls me,about stuff at work, unless I go in.
