i just started up my new computer for the first time. everything is looking good, but XP screwed up my drive letters. i partitioned my 60gb drive into a 6gb partition (windows) and a 54gb partition (everything else). it made the system partition C, BUT it made the secondary partition E and my cdrw D. i want it the other way around (hard drive D, cdrw E). well i figured that was no problem, i could just change em around in windows. but the FAQ about that said its not a good idea to change drive letters. should I or should I not? keep in mind that i have done absolutely nothing else to this computer so far, havent installed any programs, etc.

I had just the opposite problem; I wanted my DVD drive to be D:, my CD-RW to be E: and the next partion of my hard drive to be F:. I changed the drive letters before installing any additional software (C: was the only drive that had anything on it) and have had no problems what so ever.

The only annoyance is any time I need to grab files off the installation CD I have to manually specify that the installer should look in D:\i386. I need to fix this little problem in the registry but I've been too lazy to do it yet. :)

Its a matter of personal preference I suppose. This is how I like it:

C: Disk1 Win2k
D: Disk1 Data
E: mp3 player
F: Disk2 WinXP
G: DIsk2 Backup
H: CDR
I: CDRW

Does XP have Disk Management? I think it does, its in Administrative Tools in the Control Panel. That is where you'd change your drive letters.

Just go into computer management and change the drive letters to your likeing (sp).

The only problems I could see is to make sure you don't change the C:\ to something else.
