Should I change jobs?

I currently work as a developer in a high profile international financial institution in NYC. The job is extremely stressful at times. There are certain days where I'm working 12-14 hour shifts and not able to get any sleep because of all the stress. To top that off, I am getting more and more responsibilities like managing interns and I'm having to really push myself to get everything together. There are a lot of ups like working with a team mostly of my age group (mid 20s) and I have to say that my best friends are currently my work friends. Also the amount of technology I am exposed to allows me to learn a lot of new things on a daily basis and I've grown quite a bit over the years because of the stress I've been put through.

That being said, I nearly had a nervous breakdown about a month ago because of a few incidents at work. At that point, I decided I was going to quit and pursue my masters. Things have gotten much better since then... and my managers have been lauding me for the efforts I've been putting in.

Fast forward to now, and I have gotten the opportunity to work as an IT professional in one of the universities that I was applying too. The job seems fairly tedious and mundane (mainly developing on antiquated technologies) and there is quite a hefty paycut. Not only that, the people who work there are all pretty old and I wouldn't mesh well with them. But on the plus side, its less stress and would allow me to focus on my Masters.

So I'm really torn right now, one one hand I want to have less stress and live a normal life and on the other hand, I'm single (for atleast a year more) and have been advised to stick to this stressful job for a few more years then settle down once I start having a family.

So what do I do? Anyone ever faced with a similar proposition. How do you decide?

Cliffs:
+Have a really stressful job
+Have the opportunity to work in a less stressful job but take a pay cut
+What do I do ATOT?

You sure you wouldn't get more work thrown at you for being the newbie at the other place?

Be careful. If the paycut truly is "pretty hefty" you may just replace your job stress with financial stress. If you can easily adjust your lifestyle to the lower pay, then it may be worth it.

Would the cost of living be cheaper? Grad school free? Overall payoff when done for future employment?

What was your status in life? Married, had kids, other family commitments?

When I worked at that microchip plant in Eugene I was making 57,000 a year.
And I was minserable. The money did not make me happy at all. The job sucked and my life as a whole was not pleasant.
When it went out of business I found a job up in Portland.
Higher cost of living. Smaller paycheck. But the job didnt make me crazy. Overall, I was much happier.

Well, I was planning on dorming so yeah it would be cheaper. As for quality of life, I dunno. I'm sticking my excess earnings in my savings account and haven't splurged on anything expensive for like a year.

Grad school is likely to be free but it wasn't going to be much anyways.

How long had you been working at the higher salary? Do you already own a home and a car?

I guess for me, I'd rather stick through it for a few years to get financially situated post grad-school (loans and stuff like saving for downpayment).

No, your job sucks ass-drippings, but don't go to one that will stymie too much your career. You may lose some when you change out of what you're at now, but developing for antiquated technologies is a bad, bad idea. Do not do that and take that path, find another job unless you can get a guarantee your new employer has the money and the availability or you to work on newer tech.

Btw saying you're making $20k less is totally meaningless. Do you make $30k now or do you make $180k?

Own a home + car. Not worried about the home as I got it for a good deal and I could rent it out to cover my entire mortgage plus some.

Otherwise I have no other debt.

Health and sanity > $20k

New job will allow you to get your Masters and that might open up more opportunities for you. I'm doing something similar at end of this year.

mAd I'm married with no kids just my wife, me, dog and our house.
Tiamat I had been working the HS job for about 8yrs so the cars and our "toys" were payed off. Our house was about 3/4 paid off so we re-wrote the morgage just for the amount left to lower payments.

All I'm saying is if you can do it and it makes you happy go for it. You will end up way more at ease and may just fall into a great high paying job down the road...... Beats wanting to hit your head into the wall every night:)

WTF?

can people not make a life decision without consulting the internet?

This is why most people fail in life... can't think or decide things for themselves.

You've been quite the douche on ATOT lately. I've seen your posts in other threads and all you do is troll.

I'm not going to make my decision solely based on opinions of other people but I find it valuable to hear other people's experiences such as *kjm.

If all you have to add to threads are insults then do us a favor and stay the hell out.

dont let work control your life

leverage your current responsibilities and experience. while 20k isnt a really big pay cut (got more than that bump last year and i dont feel 20k richer), i wouldve looked for same pay but less stress.

although, working on campus means being around chicks....
