My uncle who's a retired immigrant, is on what I can only imagine is a fixed income just sent me a $500 check for "graduating" from college (I participated in the ceremony but will be returning to school). . . He's not necessarily poor or anything, but I don't think he's really the best candidate to send me a check for such a sum.

I have quite a few uncles though who are quite well off, a few of them owning multimillion dollar homes, and of which I would have no problem taking money from. . .and have :p. However accepting $500 from someone living in a mobile home, which is an amount that probably represents a relatively significant part of his income.

Thoughts?

Yes, he obviously wanted you to have it. But get him something nice or take him out. Just don't blow the money; put it to good use.

I can see where you're coming from- but it was his decision to send you the check, and it is rather uncouth to reject a gift because you think the giver is poor. Send him a very nice thank-you card and deposit.

do what I do when my mom gives me money. Accept it, then use it on things that you need. Then email or call him telling him how you spent it and how much it helped.

If he didn't have the money, he would not have given you the check.

Try to show him how much you honor and respect his sacrifice.

That will be the best repayment.

He's doing what he feels is right, respect that.

This sounds like a great idea.

Accept it and let him know how much it meant to you.

He would not have sent you the check if he didn't *want* you to have it. It would honor him more to cash it than not to.
