Should I call child protection on these people?

So I've been ordering chinese food from this place for over 3 years now.. Recently I've been getting my orders delivered by a 8 or 9 year old girl.. Now if this was a tiny little town where everyone knows each other then it would be kinda OK... But this is nyc - i love this city but there are weirdos here... Also, she's dropped food off as late as 11pm... What's worse is that she's terrible with math (I mean, she's just a kid!) and often gives me way too much change (she once gave me $15 back from a $10 bill! i'm sure that she's not that dumb, she's just a little kid though).. Of course, I'd correct her math.. But still, how wrong is this or am I just blowing the whole thing out of proportion? I don't want her to be taken away from her parents but they should know better... and I don't want her to get hurt either... any suggestions?

p.s. my gf also said that her parents may be illegal - I don't want them to get deported because of me!

Weird... creepy... Isn't there a limit (14-16-18 years?) until children must go to schools and not work in America?

/agree about the tough call.

It might hurt the family more, considering they are struggling to make ends meet as it is now.

Yet a 9yr girl w/ cash on her sounds like a buffet for an offender.

Yeah, it's very creepy.. I think that you can start working at 14 or so... She's a tiny little kid though- my gf and mom think that she's 8 but I think she could be 7 (it's hard to tell these days)... What's worse is that I can't get deliveries in my PJs anymore! ok, all kidding aside, I feel an odd, guilty feeling everytime I think what some less than nice person could do to a little kid that walks up to their apartment door..

I'm asian myself .. well, not chinese but I can tell... I'd say 7 to 9 is a good guess... The way she acts, etc. makes me think that she's very young ... She speaks perfect english but doesn't know basic math, etc... Definately not a 14 year old that looks young..

maybe tell the people that run the store that you will call the police/child services if they continue to do this ...

then never order from them again...becuase who knows what they would do to your food

We used to have an overlap of work hours when we'd need a babysitter.... Instead, I'd just take the kids to work with me, have them sit in the dining area at a table and do their homework. Once their homework was done, I'd have them clean the tables, take food out to customers, and other light work. Paid them for it and helped develop a good work ethic. But.... I would never ever ever even think of having them deliver food, even if it was to the building next door!

You can start work at 14 (With a permit *eye roll*) and drop out of school at 16.

Not a tough call at all - they'll get kicked out and come right back, and hopefully do somthing much less dumb.

Probably the best idea... Though I'd have someone else call on my behalf.... I mean, they know my voice and the cute woman (probably the girl's mom) that answers the phone recognizes me whenever I actually go to the store.... HMmm.. I guess they deserved to be a little scared...

You should report it and them. if they are illegal then, ahhh, that means they shouldn't be there in the first place. Stop having a bleeding heart. If I sound insensitive then so be it. Aren't you tired of hearing all kinds of crap about your country only to witness first hand why its the way it is. Everything contributes to something. This is just one of those things.

Just ask a friendly question about how old she is and if they think having her out making deliveries at night
is a good idea. Maybe if they are aware that someone "cares" about how young she is and what she is doing
maybe they will do something about it.

Perhaps she just delivers from the car to your door? I've seen some people here that bring their kids along during a delivery, driving them to the house and having the kid deliver it from the car to the door.

I believe that some minor labor laws allow for children of the family, in a family operated business, to work whenever they want.

Also, you have to factor in that doing deliveries isn't that big of a deal, afterall, some newspaper delivery people are well under 10 (at least around here.)

I would be more concerned that she is out and about so LATE.

If it concerns you that much, then call child protection. To be honest, child protection usually doesn't care if the parents are legal or not, they just make sure the children are safe. However, if they aren't legal, then child protection might have a harder time tracking them down and getting them into court.

As good as it is that you care, sometimes it's not worth putting the burden on yourself. If worse things can happen by opening your mouth, if you'd feel that bad about it, then why bother?

how does she get to your house?

car? driven by who?

if her parent or older sibling is in the car and watching her, i would ask the girl if she is having fun. if she is and she is supervised, just keep an eye on her. if she obviously doesn't like being worked or is not supervised, call!

I believe this is true.
There are exceptions to the labor laws when it involves children of the family in a family run business.
But protective services still may step in if the child is in a dangerous situation.
As others said, if she is with older family members who are driving, it's probably not as big of a deal.
But if she is by herself, out late at night with money, that IS dangerous.
Call protective services and let them know.
You would feel really guilty if something bad happens to her and you have to wonder if you might have been able to prevent it by calling the authorities.

dun do anything heroic/stupid...try to talk to her a bit more and if u can, next time talk a bit to her
parents...if u speak chinese, try telling them its dangerous...blah-blah..try to be on their side..
if u speak chinese, its not hard and they'll even 'take u in' as one of them instead of 'damn poke-kai'.
