Should I buy this "modded" Antec TruePower 420?

Thinking about buying an Antec TRUEPOWER 430 ( Link to selling thread.. not on Anandtech, sigh!)

The thing that concerns me is the "extra" connector that was "snipped off"..
I PMed the guy, and he told me the connector was:
"the one that was originally introduced for the P4 boards (rectangular 4 pin)"

and gave me a link (it's the connector on the left in the second picture)

I'm wondering.. what is this connector for, and.. do I need it?

Building an Athlon64 system..
Athlon64 3000+
MSI K8N Neo (nForce3 250)
Radeon 9800 Pro 256 (may upgrade to X800 in due time..)
etc.

That connector is required for your motherboard (and all recent motherboards for AMD or Intel CPUs). The CPU will not get power without it.

If the 6 pin connector (on the right in the 2nd picture) was missing, then you wouldn't really miss it (never seen a board that needs it).

You can buy adaptors that make a normal molex plug into the P4 12v plug. Not the end of the world, as long as you get a good price on the unit.

You can buy a brand new, with all it's connections, True Power 430W PSU from newegg for $1 less than that mook wants. $75 for a third hand (as mentioned by others), chopped PSU is a rip-off. IF you ever plan to go to an Athlon64 processor, you'll have to either hunt down the before mentioned adapter or get a new PSU. Even with newegg asking $6 shipping, you'd get a much better deal by getting the new unit ($80 total, including shipping).

The only connection I wouldn't care if it got snipped is a second (or third) floppy power plug. Those adapters are a snap to locate, and come with devices that need it (other than a floppy drive).

Yeah, the prices are in Canadian dollars.. the cheapest price I can find, after taxes/shipping would be $125 CAN.. so it's a savings of $50.

Where can I get these adaptors, and how much do they cost (NB: I can't get from Newegg.. they don't ship up here..)

Are there any consequences (stability, etc.) of using the adaptor instead of the proper connector?

You already have a nice system, why introduce a very used powersupply that could potentially fail and take some of your components with it? Not worth it in my opinion, even if it did have the 12v connector.

Ditto viivo's opinion. Don't buy that used, abused PSU. Save money for peace of mind, and system.

That sucks. Are you sure he didn't cut off the 6 pin one? Snipping the four pin is stupid. Almost every mobo uses that for the Vcore power.
