Should I buy this car?

I am looking to pick up a used Civic to use for my work commute and I found this one. I found out from the current owner that it is a salvage title and has been repaired. He says it drives great and has no ill side effects from the accident. It is a 97 Civic EX and he is asking $5000 for it. Below are pics of the car both after the accident and after repairs:

Personally, I wouldn't. The $5000 tag seems a bit hefty for a '97 Civic that's been in an accident.

No way.

Lowball to $3,800 tops. After accident cars just dont feel as soild. But I wouldn't buy a car that has been in an accident.

I?d buy it only if a good body shop inspects it and says the car is safe and repaired satisfactorily. How much you pay is between you and the seller, but I?d try to buy it for less. It is a salvage title, so I?d say that should reduce the value to slightly more than half for a car that old. $4000 sounds more like it, unless the car really is in great condition according to independent structural and mechanical experts.

EDIT: 138,000 MILES? Fsck that, that's a $2500 car.

Not a chance in hell. That year with that many miles should be around that price without having been totalled (based on a quick edmunds.com TMV). His car is worth much less. Pass this one by.

You need to understand that a salvage title is issued by the state when a car has been damaged beyond safe repair. This is more than just being totaled by an insurance company. I would recommend against buying a car with a salvage title.

I talked to the guy again and armed with new information I counteroffered $3000. Hes chewing on it as we speak.

Don't do it unless a good body shop says it's OK. And remember, having worked in the car biz, I have a decent feel for what a car like that should be bought for, and $3000 is just too much. The seller needs to find another sucker for his repaired rice-stickered wreck.

If the car drives well $3k may be a good one as long as there is not too much damage to the frame/unibody, which can mean a weaker car if you ever get in another accident.

from the looks of that picture, that car must have had frame damage. Frame Damage can never be fixed "good as new" I wouldn't pay over $2500 for that car if that. Get it checked out by a good body shop and mechanic first.

If it's a SALVAGE TITLE then avoid it, DO NOT BUY IT unless it's a REALLY good price like $2,000

I know it's hard to say no but it's not worth it, trust me.
