Technically the warranty is only good for the original owner I believe.

I don't know if Microsoft verifies that though.

See if it's actually the RROD. If so, if you know what you're doing you can repair them. The warranty situation could be spotty.

I have one that I picked up for $10 at a garage sale. I've diagnosed the problem to the DVD drive, not the board or anything else. Any idea what my options are?

Controllers, cables, psu... hdds??? Need more info.

yea all the acc are included

Hell as long as they work, for $160 you're basically getting your money's worth. $50 per HD, $25-$30 per controller and you've almost got your money back.

You might as well...I mean, from i hear, they break shortly after purchase anyways. You can save a few hundred bucks and just buy a broken one.

I was thinking about doing that. Too bad I missed out on the $140 one not long ago (from Fatwallet).

Could you mod them without opening up the console? I never really kept track of the 360 mods, but I thought all of them required you opened the console.

If it's a pawn shop, he could check to see if the warranty sticker was broken or not. If it's intact and you really did have to open the xbox to mod it, then he'll probably be fine.

Can games be loaded from the HD DVD drive?

Oh well. It would still make a cheap HD DVD player.

The DVD drive is tied to the system based on a hex value in the firmware of the drive. If the dvd drive has a mechanical error and you can extract this value, or if YOU/someone you know can extract this value using a chip reader, then you can inject the value into another drives firmware.

For this reason, xbox 360 drives are interchangeable, but its not as simple as just a hotswap. You will have to do some work to have anything more than a simple paperweight.

As long as the person before you didn't blast another firmware onto the chip, you can get that 360 up and running. If they did, then you are basically stuck with a pile of junk, as there is no way AFAIK to extract that info from whereever it is stored on the main system.
