Im buying my new computer peice by peice, starting with items that are either really cheap, or will stay at the same amount for a long time (speakers, case, etc). I was wondering if this:

audigy 2 zs is a good deal for 20 bucks off, and if i should buy it. It wont get any cheaper that that within the next 2-3 months, will it?

I noticed improvement when upgrading from onboard nforce 2 sound. Better 3d, more depth, and less static at high volume. That said, my ZS is the only component of my computer that I have repeating problems with. Pops in some games and I randomly get huge amounts of static in the mic. Lots of people hate Creative drivers and I can now see why. OVerall I'm still happy with the card. At $60 it is a great buy.

Um no. Save your money... it can be had for 100 on a sale. A hundred dollards for a near professional level card is a great deal.

Having setup a the audigy 2 for someone and running tweaks to bypass some of the resampling, it's safe to say it sounds like crap. If you enjoy bloated, unrealistic sound I guess you'd like it. ;)

If you game a lot then go for an Audigy2, if not there's better cards for music\sound editing.

DMX Terratec, are great cards..But hardly worth the money unless you are heavy into mixing music, professional music student etc.

Audigy 2ZS is good enough for most peoples needs.

You really won't be able to tell the difference between an audigy2 and that DMX unless you get professional quality speakers. Just get the audigy2.

Mine runs perfectly, i only install the "drivers only", so no bloat. Sounds awesome, great FPS, the only problems i have with it are in Battlefield Vietnam, and that is more along the lines of DICE not knowing how to write code, because EAX 3 works great in CoD and UT2004. I swore that i would never buy another creative after my driver nightmare with my LIVE, but they have come a long way. Although i still think that A3D sounded better, when done correctly in games. Much of that has to do with the game developers i think. because A3D and EAX 3 sound better in certain games and they suck in others.

Buying a computer piece by piece just isnt a good idea. Prices are always dropping and new stuff is always coming out. Save your money and buy everything together when your ready.

I doubt the retail ZS will get any cheaper than $60 in the next 2-3 months, however it may do so without requiring a rebate. But as I often note, the games bundle is easily sold to recoup more moolah for the truly budget conscious. So a ZS for $30-40 is a no-brainer. The only reason to wait is if you wanted a PCI-E Audigy 3 or whatever, but of course were willing to spend more. Even so, you could enjoy the ZS in the meantime.

*Sighs* looking at those specs is sickening. That is a company that plays the spec game. About the SNR of creative cards...it's measured with no music actually being processed! None of the creative cards are even 24 bit either. The dolby support does not matter...a card that doesn't resample will still sound better without dolby. When people talk about it being a good gaming card, well that's bs. Other cards are 1-3 FPS less than the creative cards. That's a very good sacrifice.

My 25 dollar chaintech av710 sounds better which is sad...it uses a version of the envy chip that's actually 24 bits 96Khz, no resampling.

It's a company that's a monopoly that has deceptive advertising. They are starting to loose more and more of the sound card market as people slowly wise up. So they're starting to focus on mp3 players now lol. Funny how they try to slap all those logos on to sell their products...like the mp3 players with the absolutely ****ing worthless EAX as a prime example.

hydrogenaudio.org has more info but they seem to be down these day...also check head-fi.org...no one will recommend a creative card...

Also remember about when I'm talking about sound quality, I mean trueness to life. A drum that sounds like a drum with full texture, a trumpet that sqeals. A violin that sounds raw...a clash of the cymbals ringing throughout the concert hall. Cheesy but you know what I mean.

That's just something creative cards are seriously lacking. Whenever I listen to the audigy cards, they sound like murky mud.
