Should I buy The Witcher 1?

So I love TW2, and in the interest of learning more of the plot/lore I'm considering snagging TW1 off of the GOG sale. But I've heard the gameplay is significantly different, especially that TW1 has a lot more grind to it, which I despise after a certain point. One of my favorite things about TW2 was that it kept the plot moving without tedious quest book-keeping.

So my overall question is, as an action-RPG fan who doesn't like to get bogged down in grinding, is TW1 worth it?

People bitched about the game ALOT, saying that the beginning was too slow and the click-timing style of combat was repetitious and boring. I didn't feel any of that. I enjoyed every moment of the game. So I would highly recommend it, personally.

The only quirk I found with TW1 was the combat system - it took me a bit to figure out the timing of the combat system [which builds up for some pretty impressive bonus attacks].

I didn't find any reason to grind nor did I find the plot moving too slow.

Getting the ladies into bed required a bit more finesse though - and felt more rewarding. :)

Yes - gog's TW1 for $4.99 is definitely worth it. And if you still don't like it - that's not a huge loss of $$$.

It's definitely more enjoyable than a 20 piece Chicken McNugget meal from McDonalds :p

The grinding was mostly in the beginning of the game, which is also why so many feel the game starts so slow. The second half of the game is definitely better than the first though. It is a fun game and not that different from the first, so I think you will probably like it. The sequel is the better game for the most part, so it will probably.seem.like a step.back.

FYI if you don't like the combat in the 1st there are some mods to change it, one that I've wanted to try out makes it more action based combat as opposed to the timed click system.

Where can I get said mods?

I haven't finished Witcher 2 but from what I've played so far Witcher 1 is much better. The plot seemed better, the GUI was better, and combat was better. It's funny that people complain about the Witcher 1 combat being a timed clickfest because Witcher 2 combat was just a clickfest with no timing.

They have it on moddb, it's called full combat rebalance. Actually looking at it again I'm not sure if it makes it more action-like combat but it says it is faster paced. It sounds like a huge rebalance though I was going to try it on a second playthrough of the game.

When I bought Witcher 2, I held off on playing it because I purchased W1 from GoG for $5. It was pretty excruciating in the first 2 acts but once the plot starts moving you'll get absolutely hooked... because well Geralt is one bad ass son of a bitch. Combat is nothing like W2. I thought it was kinda hokey but it's still gratifying in its own way. After playing W1 first, the combat in W2 was a huge improvement.

Since you've already played W2, I recommend you just play W1 for the story. Use game guides so you can breeze through the parts your stuck in. It's a gratifying experience when you beat the game and makes you appreciate the series/lore even more.

Am I the only one that thought the voice acting and animation was terrible in The Witcher? I bought it and played it for about 15 minutes. Didn't like it at all and was really turned off my the voice acting and dialog.

I absolutely loved TW1 and have been having a hard time getting into the sequel. I played the first 3 acts over and over again, trying to make in thru without dying on max difficulty. The second half of the game seemed easier, as I didn't really have to do any replaying. No brainer if it's $5...

I didn't like it but thats because I really can't get into single player RPGs. Tried but I just get bored. Many people seem to like it though so if this type of game interests you I would say its a no-brainer.

The Witcher is my favorite RPG ever. People's opinions are very divided on the game though, as you can see.

If you want an RPG with an extremely well-written story, interesting characters, and a mature setting, then you'll like The Witcher.

Both were terrible (or at least the english translations were) when it was released. However, the enhanced edition completely redid the translations and the English voice acting is pretty good now. (I never noticed obviously strange voice acting in the EE version like I did in the released version.)

Just remember that the game was made in Polish and all other versions are translations. The second game didn't suffer nearly as bad from bad translations.

Skip it, TW1 is the reason I haven't tried TW2. The camera sucks, the voice acting sucks, the combat sucks, the story sucks.

The beginning was rough for me with the first Witcher. I uninstalled it but went back to it later and enjoyed the experience. Never thought I would play a game where the main character could do the hippity dippity with the Lady of the Lake.
