Should I buy or should I wait?

I am graduating HS in about 1 month, and I am going to buy a new laptop with the money I get. I was planning on getting an Ispiron 8200 for about $2700 and then whatever i get for student discounts and coupons/rebates. I then thought that maybe it would be better if I waited until about mid-late summer to order since it will mainly be for college. I would like to have it at the beginning of summer for use on any of the trips I'll make and for my classes i will take during the summer (I think Astronomy and Math). The only problem with buying it at the beginning of the summer is I'm not sure whether or not any big improvements in technology will come along. If all that is going to happen in that time is a jump up in the P4's MHz then I don't really care, but if some new next generation laptop is introduced I'd rather wait. Does anyone else have this problem?

if you can hold out, then wait. Patience (sp?) never hurts.
You have nothing lose by waiting. I got a new laptop at the beginning of the summer last year, and i definetly wish i had waited 3 more months to get a better one at the end of the year. however i was glad i got it becuase i ended up using it everyday over the summer.

so basically... if you dont need it, probably be best to wait. If you really want it though, i doubt we'll see much new technology by the end of the summer... just lower prices.

People get money just for graduating from HS? I thought that was something you were just supposed to do, like washing the dishes or mowing the lawn.

No offense meant. It just struck me as a very strange ritual.

You didn't get any knid of graduation present? :Q
Did you graduate?

I'm not complaining though. Actually, I have enough saved up to buy one (two really) from the money I make from my job, but I want to have some money in the bank for college.

People get a lot of money from graduating. My grandparents almost bought me a computer until my dad told them they didn't want to pay for what I wanted. They got me halfway there, though.

I'd say it's worth it to wait, as Rallispec said, couldn't hurt. :) You never know, the price may drop or something. *shrug*

My predictions are that Intel will introduce at least a mobile 1800, and maybe a mobile 1900 model. They will drop the price on the 1600's and possibly 1700 cpus. I would guess by August that $2700 laptop will sell for about $2200...

Yeah, when I told people that I didn't really care about the graduation they all thought I was crazy. I don't see what the big deal is other than simple sentimental value. I will most likely go, but I really don't care.

If you're not really going to be needing the laptop until school, my advice is to wait until you get to school and take advantage of those educational discounts. The prices will probably have dropped a little and you get the school's discount to boot. And how else are you going to know which machine to get to "one-up" your roomate's? :D

But the thing is I am going to be taking classes in the summer time so I will still get the discounts. If i only take 1st summer semester I can go to DC for ~ a week and I would like to take it. Ugh. Doesn't it take Dell about a month to build a computer anyways? hmmm.....

As for the roommates, i I'm staying with who I think I will, his parents are richa nd buy him everything and so he will definitely have a one up on me no matter what. I loveplaying with his DVD burner (wish I could have one :disgust: )
