Should i buy Dell Warrentys?

I'm thinking about getting in on the recent 700m deal that dell has going... i've heard that their service and support has been pretty bad lately so I dont think i would consider paying more for it. I don't really know what their service and support will offer, but i feel that i am competent enough with computers to fix any software issues that may come up. However, i'm wondering whether or not i should spend the extra money to get warrentys or accidental damage protection thing they have. This would add an extra $300 or so... so i don't really want to get it unless its worth it.

Any opinions would be appreciated!

Lets see...

My Dell is about 10 months old..

List of stuff replaced under warranty:
1) Hard Disk
2) Optical Drive
3) Battery

I would recommend you get that extra warranty, I recent upgraded mine...

My Gf has a two year old gateway 450 series. they dont make a lot of the things in it today. She has accidental protection. She was working one day on the roof and it .... 'fell.' Now she has the updated 450.

I don't know if its a bad sign or not but I sent Dell an Email 3 days ago and have heard nothing back, not even a confirmation to say they received my Email.

YES -- Definitely get the extended warranty. Software issues you don't want to dick with Dell about anyway, you'll just talk to someone in India who will ask for your restore disks. But hardware issues are a must. Laptops are expensive to repair and expensive to re-purchase if you drop it. Get their warranty with accidental damage coverage, for however long you want. Depot vs on-site is up to you. Be warned if you send off your laptop to dell it might take a while to get back...

Had my 600m for over a year. A few days ago I took a spill down the stairs while carrying my laptop. Plastic got real beat up, got a hole in it, and the backlight was flickering.

Luckily I got a 3 year complete care warrenty, so now it's in the shop and they are fixing it up for free (including shipping charges both ways). I believe i'm supposed to have next day in house service, but the damage/repairs seemed like they would be extensive (almost all the exterrior, plus backlight and I think a speaker).

I'll post back if I have any complaints when I get my laptop back, but the warrenty seemed well worth it, especially considering I like to have a few beers while I game on it, and it covers spills.

*edit* forgot to say, spent a bit of time on hold while everything was getting approved/sorted out, but I didn't have to fight with them at all about any of the repairs, and they wanted me to check to make sure even the last scratch would be fixed. Oh and they are also replacing my AC adapter (old model had an issue with a high pitched noise if left plugged into the machine after it was fully charged and off, but I was living with it).

RossMAN: I thought it was an important point that I didn't have to argue at all, and I was rather surprised by it, given the reputation that some have given DELL recently. Not only didn't I have to argue, the rep on the phone kept asking "Anything else scratched? Anything else wrong with it?". Hopefully the end of the experience (ie getting the laptop back in working order) will be as good as the beginning.

you can complete warranty until 30 th day of order then you can get onny the standard extended warranty. if you carried it around alot i would get the complete it covers everything except total abuse

if you have enough money to replace the laptop when it dies, then no don't waste your money. If you are on a budget and will be screwed if the computer dies, then buy the warranty.

shipped it into dell on friday

attempted delivery back to me was on tuesday, wasn't home so rescheduled to today.

laptop looks good, nearly all the plastic casing has been replaced, plus they say the system board has been replaced as well (newest BIOS flashed on it, so they are probably telling the truth). Everything seems to be working so far.

few details missing: they forgot to ship me back the small plastic placeholder that goes in the PCMCIA slot and they forgot to replace my AC power adapter. Called them up and they will be shipping these items to me, and will require me to send my old AC adapter back.

only signs that it's not a completely new system (other than my HDD with everything loaded) are a small nick just behind one of the hinges, that appears on the removable plastic part just above the keyboard, and that 1 dead pixel on my screen is in the same spot.

Keyboard seems more stable on it's own now (I had it jury rigged with a small piece of folded paper to add stability before, took it out before sending in), probably due to a tighter fit with the plastic pieces.

Now I just need to ghost my HDD and install that new 7200rpm hdd that came in while the laptop was in the shop.

I don't know if they do this to everyone, but pretty much I don't have enough money to get the extended warranty so I didn't. I got it in my CC which extended 1 more year... but dell sent me a letter i think a week ago saying I can get the 3 year for like 175 or something. Again it might be YMMV but just leting ya know.
