Should I buy an Xbox or just build a media center type PC?

I already have a PS2 which is awesome, but I like quite a few games that are on the Xbox. Although most of these games are also on the PC. I myself would prefer to sit in a nice comfy position when playing games. Sitting upright at a computer desk can get painful and awkward. But I am sure I could do this with both systems. I know the Xbox would be cheaper, but after you include price for mod chip and maybe a bigger hard drive and what not, it will geta bit closer. Not to mention the computer can be used for more then just games and playing Movies and music. Also I soon want to join the Tivo revolution. I could obviously buy a Tivo or again i could set up the computer as a PVR. So if you also include the cost of the Tivo and Xbox, again the price will be closer to the price of the computer. I am just looking for your general opinion on what you think would be the better way to go?

By the way I do not currently have an HDTV or surround sound. I do intend to get a surround system soon, maybe after christmas. But I have no idea when i will upgrade to HDTV. So I won't get to take advantage of those things fromt he Xbox or the computer I guess. Although my Toshiba TV does offer component Inputs. So I do at least have a high quality hook up, although I am not sure how much good this does on a standard TV. I don't currentlly have anything connected to it via component. My PS2 was connected via Svideo until I accidently bent a pin, now I am back on composite till I decide to go get a new Svid cable.

SO what would you do?

Yeah obviously a PC is a much better machine, but I already have one. The media center PC would be another computer which would reside by the TV. Mainly used for gaming, movie watching, maybe music playing. These are all things a modded Xbox can do though. I am just wondering what its like to browse the web and do normal computering task on a TV is like

If you already own a PS2, then I really don't see much reason why you'd need an Xbox. There's only a handful of games that are on the Xbox that aren't on the PS2. You really aren't gaining anything, especially if you don't have a bigger TV and a full 5.1 digital surround setup in place.

As for the HTPC - if you already have a stand alone DVD player (or a console that does DVD) then I never saw much reason for them other than "geek factor".

My opinion - save your $$

There actually are quite a few games for Xbox that ar enot available on PS2, but those games are mostly available on PC.

Yes I currentlly have my PS2 to play DVDs on

Yeah I am not sure if I like the Megas or not. The green one is alright I guess, but the Orange one is fugly. If I did go the HTPC route it would likely be small form factor. Prolly Biostar, maybe shuttle or one of the others.

I am kinda leaning towards the Xbox, cause I would prefer Tivo to a time shifting computer. Its just simpler.

I mean I love my PS2. GTA, GT, FF, ace combat, MGS, I mean the game sare just awesome.

But I also would like to be able to play games like Jedi academy, Jade Empire(when it comes out), Black and white 2(when it comes out, assuming its not on PS2, which i doubt it will be)Halo. There are more I just cant think of right now

sounds like you'd enjoy the console more to me then.

btw, I just built a small pc using the Biostar barebones. Turned out pretty good. and looked nice.

Yeah, but of those games listed, only Jade Empire is not on PC, and I have no idea how good it will be.

I just wish I knew if there will be a post holidays price drop. I can wait if we will get one soon.

Yeh, but Jade Empire doesn't come out for a year. So I wouldn't even worry about it at this point.

If you want mainly the media aspects of it get a PC. Much, much easier to turn into a media machine.

Games the xbox represents a very inexpensive way to play the newest games, but since you have the PS2 that's probably got you covered in that arena.

i prefer a PC.. as soon as i get a receiver case, im throwing it in there 🙂 i'm putting a leadtek tv tuner in there, so time shifting will be through that. might not be as simple as a TiVO, but i'm in the mood to build a pc 🙂

Dnag Jade is still a year away. I didn't know it was still that far off. I don't know I will prolly wait for after the holidays to see if they drop the price. Then decide. Thanks

Get surround sound. Especially if you like watching movies, playing video games. A Dolby Digital / DTS 6.1 receiver can be had for about $200.

Yeah I know, I really wnat surround sound, but I am currently living in a basement, and would have little to no room for a surround sound setup.
