Should I buy an XBox as my DVD player..plz advise

Ok, so here is the deal. I was gonna get myself a DVD player for my birthday, and I came across a good deal for an xbox with the dvd playback kit for about 185. I am not THAT much into games, but I figure if I had one, I'd probably play it. Anyway, I probably would have spent about 150 on a DVD player, so why not have both? I think it will make me more popular with the boys 😉

What am I really missing out on by getting the XBox with DVD playback versus a regular DVD player? Is it a good idea?? Please please pass on your words of wisdom. I am so bad at decisions.
 
Well, do you currently own/plan on owning a HDTV-ready TV with progressive scan anytime soon? If the answer is 'yes', then skip on the Xbox and go with a progressive-scan DVD player (about the same price as an Xbox, maybe cheaper.) If the answer is 'no', then pick up the Xbox! The Xbox is definately capable of progressive-scan output, and some games can take advantage of that. Unfortunately, for some stupid reason progressive-scan isn't enabled when playing DVDs. Maybe there's a mod chip/hack for that...I dunno.
 
xbox DVD player is not progressive scan. However, if that's unimportant to you, then I see no reason in not getting the xbox.

You might want to keep an eye out though. There is a new xbox bundle out there with the new smallerr controller and two games (Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2002) for the same price as the old one. I've heard that the free after rebate DVD playback kit offer is NOT eligible for this bundle, which makes sense because the upc's will be different.
 
An even better idea would be to get the new Xbox bundle: system, S-controller, Sega GT 2002 and Jet Set Radio Future. Same price of $199. Oh, and if you buy the DVD Playback Kit like now or before some time in November, there's a mail-in rebate which makes it essentially free.
 
I don't think I have an HDTV-ready TV (its a Sony 24 inch, kinda simple). Irregardless, we have the whole entertainment center thing downstairs for when i want to watch DVDs with all the bells and whistles...this DVD player would be secondary. I just wnat to make sure it is still useful, you know?
 
I did the same think for our bedroom TV. It's great when I want to play console games or when I want to stick the kids in my room to watch a movie, so I can watch football on the bigscreen in the living room.

Find a rebate form and check what upc code numbers are allowed. Then go to a store that has the bundle and see if they match. I am guessing they don't.

Alternativly, find a phone number on the form and call them to ask

 
Why, it can't play them, I guess?

The rebate form doesn't really say that you can't get it with the deal, so I might just go for it

you can play SVCDs, DivX, VCDs, and have progressive scan DVD playback with the Xbox. But you need a modchip.

If I were to get an xbox I would probably want it modded, for those exact reasons. I thought the new model xbox couldn't be modded though. Have they defeaten that already?

A friend of mine uses his XBOX as a DVD player and has no complaints. I say go for it. 🙂

Okay, so I think I'm gonna do it. Although, it looks like the rebate is off on this deal, according to the Hot Deals forum. Anyone know if I can mod the new XBox though?

Supposedly the new one has been cracked already..check the isonews.com forum and xboxhacker.net for details. One thing to note though...the progressive scan DVD playback is not that good. Its comparable to a very very basic progressive scan player. Most HT enthusiasts wouldn't consider it satisfactory. A relatively cheap $150-$200 progressive scan DVD player like the Panasonic RP56 easily beats it.
