Anandtech RX 590 review final words and conclusion.

Ahh, Wolfenstein II. So, that games has a quality preset that is above ultra, called "Mein Leben". Guru3D did a comparison of video memory at the various settings. The difference between Ultra and Mein Leben is the size of the textures. Its similar to running a 3rd party texture pack for Skyrim. The game has also suffered from some bugs that cause it to not let go of VRAM.

But yes, this game on its super ultra does suck up video memory, and is pretty much the only game out there that will easily consume more than 4GB on its highest setting. But like I have said, I have played lots of games, never had my 4GB card run out of video memory. And it tends to be pretty obvious when a card does, as you get lots of hitching.

EDIT: It should be noted that Guru3D stated that game play was smooth, and frame times were fine. But it most likely did have to grab textures from disk more often than a card with more memory.

What article was this posted in? I have not seen any that say 4GB, yet alone 6GB, isn't enough for 1080P.
quote Anandtech
"Once again though, we've observed that VRAM is never enough. It was only a few years ago that 8GB of VRAM was considered excessive, only useful for 4K. But especially with the popularity of HD texture packs, even 6GB of framebuffer could prove limiting at 1080p with graphically demanding games. In that respect, the RX 590's 8GB keeps it covered but also brings additional horsepower over the 8GB R9 390. For memoryhogging games like Shadow of War, Wolfenstein II, or now Far Cry 5 (with HD textures), the 8GBs go a long way. Even at 1080p, GTX 980/970 performance in Wolfenstein II tanks because of the lack of framebuffer. For those looking to upgrade from 2GB or 4GB cards, both the RX 580 and RX 590 should be of interest."

4gb is enough for 1080p games on HIGH settings.
I've said this a million times, you don't buy a $180 card to play with every single setting maxed.
Ultra settings vs high settings = NO PERCEIVABLE DIFFERENCE.
Some games will UTILIZE more than 4gb of memory but don't REQUIRE IT.

Save your money, 4gb will be fine, you will need to upgrade the card before 4gb vram ever makes a difference.

my 2 cents

As I've stated previously, it's enough for 99% of games at 1080p, but not DCS World or Squad (on High) unless you want to turn the settings down a lot. Otherwise, constant stuttering. Granted, those are niche games and if I didn't play those and had a 4GB card I certainly wouldn't be upgrading just to get more Vram. The 3GB 1060 was excellent for 1080p.

Honestly if I didn't have a son with a PC I probably would just stop playing those games rather than upgrade. Having said that I don't know that I'd buy a card now with less than 6-8GB, but I upgrade to last for 10 years, not every two years like some.

Sorry but you guys are wrong. Having more vram DOES NOT HURT. It's not like he's paying $100 or $50 extra for 8gb. IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME PRICE!
