Should I buy a new video card just to get an HL2 voucher?

I will definetly be buying HL2 when it comes out. Therefore, I'm pretty much stuck paying $40 minimum for the game if I buy it from the store. But, I could just buy a radeon 9600pro for about $100 off newegg. (If 9600pros come with hl2 vouchers)

I checked Sapphire's Website and it says only the 9600xt's come with HL2 vouchers. I am not sure about Powercolor or other vendors.

I currently have a gf4 mx 440. I know a lot of people are going to say "get a 9800pro instead". Well, my power supply wont be able to handle it, and if i'm going to be buying a new video card and power supply, I might as well upgrade everything. So please don't say that.

I wouldn't bother. Not worth going from gf4 to 9600. That's my opinion though it's not a total waste of money.

If it was a GF4 Ti I'd agree, but he has a GF4MX which is pretty much a GF2.

You'd notice a nice improvement.

The difference between a 9600XT and a GF4MX in Half Life 2 will be PHENOMINAL.

I'd hate to try and play HL2 on a GF4MX. I feel dirty just thinking about it.

While the 9600XT is hardly the top of the line these days, for $100 including $40 worth of game? Yes, well worth it.

*EDIT* Proofs in the pudding, here at anandtech even: http://www.anandtech.com/video...oc.aspx?i=1797&p=6 - the 9500 Pro can be compared to the 9600XT in performance if you wish, although most would agree it would be slightly superior. As you can see, the 9600XT would be a massive improvement over the GF4MX.

Yes a 9600XT would probably massacre any GF4 MX, it is unclear as to whether the GF4 is MX or a Ti. The difference between a 9600XT and a GF4 Ti4x00 is not worth $100, free game or not.

The guy has a gf4 mx 440, which means it's an MX, not a TI. The 9600xt would be a great upgrade, valve has said themselves that the 9600 series gives the best bang for the buck in HL2.

For me I would just wait until the game comes out then buy a new card. Who knows, they may even be cheaper but you will certainly get to know which card performs best on public code and not some preview sent to the relevent websites. It is safe to say however, that ATI is the likely winner in this catagory.

Question - I read on the IGN boards that ATI cards are no longer bundled with HL2 vouchers. Is this true? Thanks

Not sure about that one. You may well be correct. 🙂

My brother got a 9600XT about 3-4 months ago, and no HL2 voucher was included. So I'd have to say, they probably don't come with it anymore. Maybe Sapphire still does - my bro got the Built by ATI one.

I know TFC:source wont be out for a while after HL2 is released, but what package will be required to be able to play TFC:source?

Yeah totally... GF4MX -> 9600 is a huge difference; but only for current games. The problem of course is that a 9600 is pretty much the lowest possible GPU you want to own right now. It's bottom of the "decent 3d gaming card" barrel and won't do a thing for you over the next couple years. Unless you're planning on just playing games that have come out over the last 2 years... your 9600 will really be a waste.

Of course, you could actually play HL2 on it (at lower settings) while your GF4MX is going to turn into a "nVidia MX Slideshow".

Not really. If that's the best you can get, buy it. But don't do it for the voucher. HL2 isn't going to run great on that card and since the game isn't out yet, we don't know if the rest of your system needs upgrading to play the game.

I wonder which cards still have the vouchers? The game is worth $70CDN.... that's like $70 off the price of the video card - or $70 more value. Worth considering......
