Most reports are that the dealers are not discounting as much as folks were expecting.

There's no harm in shopping but you may not find any 'real' bargains from what I've seen at dealers around here.

That is because the big discounts were 2 months ago. Around easter time, some dealers were getting desperate and some even still had 08s on the lot. It was wow....my gf talked a 4 Door auto Civic EX down to 16.7K and she sucks at negotiating. She was about to decide Civic, but I got a Corolla S with a sunroof for 15.7K and the was without subtracting the college rebate. It was this merry go around of prices falling. Dealers kept saying, "We can't do that price". Then the manager would call me the next day and go, "Fine, we'll match it", then I would start the process again and the prices would fall more. It got the point where I was so tired of it that I just made a low ball offer to a huge dealer. The dealer called me back literally 3 minutes after I emailed the offer and said to come down and fill out the paper work. I was gonna be cheap and try to get another $150 off or get something thrown in, but that was the only place with the color my gf wanted. Now, word has spread and demand has picked up....there is no reason to be agressive anymore.

HOWEVER, I know the following cars can still be deeply discounted....

Any Hyundia besides the base Santa Fe (and I have still seen 08 Tiburons on the lot)
09 Mazda 3s (if you can find one)
09 Cx-7 (I am talking $7K off sticker just by asking...no one wants to buy it b/c no one wants the turbo and the 6 cyl will be in the 10 models)
09 Altimas (nice car, just noisy)
ANY big Toyota SUV. If you can find an 08, the prices gets knocked down by 12K.
Any Kia
Any Mitsubishi (people still buy them?)
09 Corollas (LEs are mostly gone, but you can get an S for the same price because their a monster rebate on the s models)

You also have to ask, "What do people think is a big discount?"

I mean, Toyota offered 0% for 60 months...when have you seen Toyota do 0%, let alone the 60 months. In lots of cases, that beats the socks of the 1.5K rebate on a Camry. When was the last time you could take 1.5K off the MSRP of a Camry and still have about $700 in wiggle room for price?

From what i see, certified preowned lexus SUV's (rx350s inparticular) aren't getting any good deals.

Well I just read an article that a Virginian dealer is offering up to 40% off of some cars because he needs to sell them by June 9th. So I guess you can get a great deal.

That is a used car. Used cars are horrible to buy now (an dthey have been for the past year) as they have overinflated values and people are still buying them because of the lower sticker they carry. Also, used cars do not have rebates.

What year are you looking at? I see 06/07s are still going for $35k+. Either get a new Q5 or wait for the X3 makeover for 2010.

Q5 is a very nice car but starts at 49K new 😕 way over her $30-35k budget. shes looking at 07/08's currently and needs to get a new car pretty soon for work

That can't be right. That's more than an X5... the Q7 being the direct competitor. The Q5 from what I saw starts at 38k or so.

I test drove that thing around a "track" at an Audi event recently and it's got pretty good pep and you do get a lot for that price... more than the X3 but I guess that's to be expected.

About the budget, I would personally never spend over $30k on a used anything... $5k tops, but that's just me. Finance the ~$40k if you have to and you won't even feel it's that much more.
