Should I buy a 7800 GT

I'm about to make my purchase, either a 7800 gtx or 7800 gt. From the benchmarks, it looks like the 7800 gt was quite able to achive similar preformance as the gtx.

I'm either going to get the eVGA GTX from Newegg for $504 or the GT for $399 from monarch.

What do you guys think?

The GT seems better now, however why dont you wait a week or so until the prices settle down. If they dont you still have it for 399.

What system will you be running this on btw.

I'd save the $100 and go with the 7800GT. It's a much better price/performance ratio, IMHO. It is so close to the 7800GTX in benches that you won't notice a difference in gameplay. Since the 6800GT was selling for the same price points less then a year ago, I'd say this is a fair price. I doubt you'll see this card selling below the $399 price point for several months if it follows the precedent set by the 6800GT.

2 GB (2x 1gb) OCZ Platinum
250 GB SATA Seagate Hard Drive
NEC DVD Burner (already have it)
eVga 7800 GT or GTX
AMD X2 3800+ (already have it)

Well, I guess I'm kind of wondering, would the 7800 gtx be better in future games because of the extra 4 pipes and 20 mhz clock?

It will be marginally better. Get the EVGA 7800GT then in 90days step up to the GTX. You cant go wrong then.. especially if the Ultra comes out. Then, if in 90days if the Ultra isn't out, you can step up to the GTX... then in 90days the Ultra is bound to be out and you can step up to that if you so desire.

EVGA 7800GT for me.

cant remember which site review it was, one of them tried unlocking the pipes, it showed them there but the version of Rivatuner they used didnt seem to let it once they restarted their computer....however a new version might, personally im willing to wait and find out, if it can then im gonna get 7800GT so i can SLI it one day, unlocked GTX specs...heh

so my advice is wait if you can, if not get a GTX just in case...lol

Looks like it's time to go PCI-e for me. That 7800GT from eVGA for 399.00 at monarch is terrific. Then a little step up down the road.

I decided to bite the bullet and by the eVGA GT from monarch, along with the rest of my parts from newegg. Hopefully I get them soon.

I should get my 2005fpw today or tomorrow.

This will be my first high-end computer ever, and will probably be the only one for quite a few years.

you're only allowed 1 step up per card i believe.

the other thing to consider is evga sells at msrp on their site, so no bargain hunting for you. if the gtx falls in price it most likey won't be reflected in their price. look at their 6600gt prices, still ~220 last i checked.

and of course you have to figure you'llbe out a card for a couple weeks as they won't do an advanced step up rma on the cards. so a few days to get your card to them, a few days for them to ship the new plus what ever transit time. took me ~10 calendar days i think.

not dissing the program, i love it and will be stepping up a second card this weekend.

cheers, that wasnt the site i was talking about, but same result, most likely the pipes cannot be unlocked, unless a new version of Rivatuner finds a way to do it succesfully...lol

I just bought an ATI x800xl and haven't used it, should I eBay it and get a 7800GT instead? How much better would the performance be?

Go look at the Anandtech review. Look at the X800XT and 7800 GT and imagine something a bit slower than the X800 XT.
