should I buy a 2008 WRX?

I'm thinking of getting a manual '08 WRX. I test drove one and really liked it, the car is plenty powerful for me as is.
The '09 WRX is coming in a few month with some kickass upgrades (40hp and 40lb/ft more and few other options as standard). I'm wondering how much I should pay for an '08 given what's coming in the future. I have a quote for around $21k (out the door); is that a good price?
The '09s will probably not drop since there are lots of people waiting to get it.

No, buy an '09.

Buying a first year of production car is never good.

They will have a good number of upgrades on the 09s over the 08s. Search for it, I forgot where I read it.

Dude. 2009 WRX kicks the 2008 WRX's ass like nothing. Go to car and driver for a quick review of it. They like it 🙂

Well, the trick is, at 21k i'm really pushing my budget, and I know i will not be able to afford the '09 at $24k+. How much of a price difference should there be to make this WRX not be a bad buy? The '08 has enough power for me 🙂

sent you message... but it's not just power - the 09 is supposed to be better in almost every way including handling.
do check out the subaru forums before making up your mind.

21K is a ok price if you are going to keep it for a long time since it will be a hard sale later with the 09' much improved. Its not just power - handling, moonroof, tires, STI turbo exterior/interior upgrades...
I would wait until the 09' are on the lot and get the price even lower. Make sure you check with your insurance agent before you buy though what is going to cost you.

Yeah, I also wonder if you'll start seeing a lot of used 2008 models for sale now that the 2009 is about to come out.
Re-sale value definitely won't be as good later on, but no worries if you drive it to the ground
good luck OP

09 STI's are not out yet. 08's are still here until about late fall/early winter I believe. The 08 STI's were released in January of 08.

I've got an 08 STI and I absolutely LOVE IT... you can't go wrong with an 08 WRX, just spend an extra 700 for the Cobb AP, and you'll have the power of the 09... granted, waiting till the 09 would be good too but 21K offer is really good!

Insurance is going to cost an extra $30/mo. This should be a big step up for me, i drive a 98 camry 😀.

If it was my choice, I'd go with either a slightly older one, like a 2006 or so. And then wait till you can afford a 2010 WRX, since it will be the second year for that model at that point. Or get the 2006 and do the same thing in about 2012, get the 2010 WRX at that point.

Either that, or just wait till you have the money to afford the 2009 model.

The 09 wrx has a larger turbo so you can get more power in the end.

the WRX is a great car... reliable, AWD, great power, and decent mpg

I test drove an 08 and I loved it; unfortunatly, I was in the market for an automatic. Apparantly, auto WRX's, especially new ones are rare to come across. All they had were manuals; it was still fun to drive though.

I'd definetly look into a WRX again in the future. The one thing I didn't care too much for was the interior; i felt a bit cramped in there, especially in the back seat.

Wow that is a bogus number for the WRX.

Yeah epic fail on their math.

I would have to look at the numbers again. But I believe they start with a fully decked MSRP 2008 model, and then look at the resale on an '03 which had a much lower MSRP when released.

Anyway, sounds like a ploy to keep people buying AMG Merc's, despite the fact that they are among the least reliable cars on the road. Talk about a money sink.

Subaru offered me 17K to trade in my 06 with 40K miles on it just a few months ago and I paid 21K OTD in May of 06.
