Should I buy a 1986 Oldsmobile Calais Supreme?

I've been without a car for over a month now and today a guy told me he'd sell me his 1986 Oldsmobile Calais Supreme with only 7100 miles on the odometer for $500. Apparently it's hardly ever been driven and is in pretty decent shape. The paint is a bit faded, but I couldn't see anything else wrong with it from the outside.

I'm really not sure about buying a 20 year old car, is it a good idea or a bad idea?

I checked the odometer and it says 7100.. I've known the guy for a while and he mostly hitches rides with friends and hardly ever drives it. He said it had 4950 miles when he bought it from his uncle after his aunt died.

Well, run it through carfax...that'll usually show true mileage.

Its not good for a car to sit around so much over 20 years, either.

Seeing how you don't have wheels and it's only $500, I would say to go for it.

Just change the oil and make sure it has some decent tires and you probably have a good beater for a few years.

IMHO, IF you will do any necessary work on it yourself.
Otherwise it could get pricey. Could be 20 year old fluids sitting in that thing.

that's what i was kind of worried about. it's not like it's just sat for years at a time, he drives it probably 4-5 times a month, but only about 15-20 miles at a time.

For $500 I cant see a reason not too.

Hell on weekends you could drive it up to the local mall and let people hit it once with a baseball bat for $1.

After about 3 weekends, you could have a free car (albeit an ugly ass beat up car) plus some pocket change for gas.

Whats not to love?

anytime i see a $500 or < vehicle and ppl asking to buy it or not, i just make sure they say it runs.

if it runs, and doesnt burn oil, and most things are clean looking, if it runs for 5 months, thats $100 a month, if it runs for 2 years, thats NOTHING, its so very cheap there is almost no reason not to.

Bleed the brakes with new fluid, flush the coolant system, change the oil, change the gas, change the tires, and it should be golden.

It just seems like WAY too little mileage, though. If it truly is 7100, I'd buy it.
