Should I build now or wait?

Hoping to have a comp that lasts my 2-3 years with a few upgrades

Quite a few things come to mind:

Wolfdale/Yorkfield
DDR3

Phenom X2/Phenom X4

PCI-E 2.0
Second Generation DX10 cards
PSUs with native 8 pin PCI-Express Power Connectors for newer Graphics Cards

One way to think of it is are any of these things a revolution (EX: P4 to Core 2 Duo) rather than a evolution

p4 to core2duo is definitely more than an evolution.

op - there will always be things on the horizon so do it now, and just don't spend a ton of $$$ knowing that it will be obsolete in 6-9mos

The Wolfdale / Yorkfield is most certainly an evolution of the current C2D Conroe / Kentsfield lines. The next revolution is expected with Intel's Nehelem platform, which will after many years dispose of the FSB architecture in favor of something more like AMD's hyperchannel setup. Not much is known yet on the AMD X2 / X4 chips, except that as of now, AMD is a "revolution" behind Intel. Whether the Phenom chips will surpass Intel's best offering is yet to be seen.

I agree, dont spend a ton of money for the upgrade. Im going to upgrade to AM2 instead of upgrading my S939 cpu, DDR400, and other components. Atleast when its time to upgrade to AMDs next revolution I will have DDR2 memory, decent power supply, and motherboard that can use the new chips (though not to its full potential). Upgrading to AM2 will cost about $350, if I could sell my old system for about $100; thats about $250.

Gotta be honest if you wanna future proof, Quad Core + 4 Gigs of Ram + Vista will be pretty darn long term solutions. If you do it right you can pull that off for around 1500

530 for Q600
300 for 2x2GB sticks
Vista Home premium OEM 130

That leaves you 540 for mobo, video, case, PSU, HDD and Optical.

definitely doable and should last a while.

Course cutting the Q6600 to a lower Core 2 and getting a bigger video card might be a good call
