Should I bother upgrading memory on my Synology

I have been debating about upgrading my Synology3612xs from 2GB to 4GB of memory. I don’t use anything fancy on this NAS. Since this NAS doesn’t support OS virtualization so there’s no real need for significant memory upgrade hence 2->4 GB thought.

The question is should I even bother to upgrade its memory? I’ve been casually looking at its memory usage and have not seen anything above 50% even during 10Gb file transfer (~280MB/sec or so).

In the near future, I would like to host minecraft server for my 2 kids. I have no idea what kind of resource is needed yet.

Going from 2->4GB won't help file transfers, really. It might speed up small writes a bit (write caching) but that's about it.

But hosting a minecraft server? Depends. For 1-2 users, ~2GB is probably fine, but if their friends join in, you'll want 4+GB just for the minecraft server.

What kind of CPU is in it? I ran a minecraft server on a dual core Atom with 4GB of RAM and it was slooooooow. Migrated to a VM on my main server with only 2GB assigned and it was dreamboat by comparison. But, then, I'm one of only like 3 people using it, and very rarely at that.

The CPU is an i3-2100 it's has a massive heat sink on it w/o a CPU fan so I am not sure if it's really designed to tax the CPU at 100%.

I tried to host Minecraft server using the instruction on the web (host minecraft server on synology), but I don't know how to connect to the server with the iPad so I am not sure if I did the hosting correctly.

That should be plenty of CPU.

Never tried it on an iPad, myself.
