first a little background: [i bought a 700mhz TBird last november from Fry's. Pretty much right away I started having a power problem with my PC that I could not resolve. Basically it was just a real pain to get the thing to power on. I never really did figure it out, until my CPU died the other night. I went and bought a 1gig TBird and now everything is fine. (I had to pay an outrageous $110 for it at Fry's because I needed my PC right away for work). I think the original CPU wasnt solid to begin with. I have an MSI K7T Pro mobo, so I cant really overclock, though I did run it at 750 from time to time.]

So, do you think I am justified in a warranty of the old CPU? They say on the box its a 3 year (limited) warranty. I really dont think the minor overclocking I did should disqualify me from a warranty. I monitored the heat and it wasnt an issue. I dont need to mention the ocing either, i dont think, since I didnt modify the chip...

I guess my bigger question is whether or not it will be worth the hassle to try and get the warranty. Is AMD even known to treat these circumstances fairly and promptly? I guess I will find out soon enough. I emailed them yesterday. I feel like I should at least get the current market value of the CPU, even if its only $40. (I paid $130 at the time, and add all the headaches I had trying to figure out the power problem the defective thing caused)...

Well, i would look into getting the RMA on it, since the chip is still worth something even if it is dead (you can get a replacement form warranty). THe otheroption is to try to sell someone a dead CPU, not cool, or just throw it out. Since youalready got a replacement, there is no time issue, so just get a replacement and see how it goes... Good luck...

I agree -- get it replaced. That way they send you a good chip that you can either sell or hold on to as a replacement incase your 1gigger goes bad. Spare parts can go a long way to diagnosing problems you may encounter in the future. I don't think you will have problems with AMD although, knock on wood, I've never had to go that route. I wouldn't expect the quickest turn-around, but you're not in a big hurry.
