I just bought a Yamaha 20x10x40 IDE burner used off the forums here. Well I install it and it detects fine. So when I get into windows I put in one of my info backup discs and it starts making grinding noises then all of a sudden it pops. Well I take my backup CD out and it had circular scratches on it like its been rubbing something. It did this twice. Well after the second time it seems to be working fine. I know this ain't normal. Should I ask for a refund if he doesnt have insurance on it(which I think he does)? Or do you all think it will be fine?

It burnt a CD ok. I just don't know if I should ask for my money back? Whats your alls opinions?

Perhaps not a cdrw drive, but my old 52x cdrom did the same thing.

First, it created that circular scratch you mentioned (Win2k Pro disk! aaaaaargh~) with a big pop and after killing few more cds, a cd got caught in a spin and shattered inside the cdrom while in use. Pieces of it got stuck somewhere and it killed the cdrom motor.

The shop I bought the system from sent me a replacement cdrom.. but it scratched a disc on the first go. I'm very careful in placing cds in it now.. as long as its in dead center, it seems to be okay.

Not meaning to scare you or anything.. but just letting you know what happened to me.. so you can make an informed(?) choice.

Drives dont just fix themselves... ;) So see what the person is willing to do about the problem...? (in other words contact them promptly to make the aware of this...)

Possibly give it a few days (if the other party agree`s to this) to see how the drive will do...?

Is the drive under warranty anyhow...? (you could get a new drive possibly...?)

Ask if they have the recipt...?
