i currently am running a core i7 4790, an nzxt kraiken x61, r9 290, an 850 evo ssd, nzxt h440 case, 16gb ddr3. currently i have a seasonic ss500et psu and have been running this current setup for about a year. Should i be worried about my psu if im going to be putting in a brand new gtx970, meaning did i put to much stress on my psu previously? thanks

290 uses more power, so if it's running fine now there won't be an issue. The real question is why upgrade from a 290 to a 970 when they are so close in performance? Might as well wait 6+ months and save up another $100 or so for a huge gain with the 16nm gpus.
