Should I be worried with these temps?

When running Prime95 my CPU temps are 63c and Idle 52c, is it just bad readings from the Abit monitor or should I get a better Heatsing?

Do yourself a favor and get a heatsink before that thing goes beyond those temps. I personally don't have any temps on any machine going over 40 C.

If those are form your Abit IC7 then they are well within normal readings according to Abit. As far as whether Abit's temp readings are too high or other companies readings are too low, it's hard to say.

Given the operating temperature that Intel discusses in their literature I suspect Abit's readings might be more accurate.

Those are my exact temps also on a IC7 mobo w/ P4C 2.4 chip.

Idle @ 52C
Load @ 63C (Prime95)

I wonder if it is OK to attempt an OC with these temps?

ya, if it were an old tbird, that temp is not to bad. For a P4C, that's way to high, something's not right.

If you read the info at the link I provided Abit lists idle temps of 50c and load temp of 75c, so 63c is well within normal.

Hmm, right now Im idling @ 49-50C with Prime95 off.

I took off the heatsink, lapped it and put arctic silver on it. It droped 12c, wow. That thermal pad that came with it must suck.

If 75C under load is normal according to Abit, then I should be ok. Right now, Im @ 3ghz and after running Prime95 for about 5 minutes, the CPU temp went up to 70C and my warning beeps kicked in. If 75C is within specs, should I adjust the warning up to 75C?

I suppose it's safe, but personally I wouldn't even be happy with those temps on an AMD system (AMD's seem to be safer at higher temps than Intels). Look into a new HSF and/or some new thermal compound, possibly ASIII or Ceramique.

Heat is not a safety issue with your CPU so as long as your voltage is within norms don't sweat it. Should your CPU temp get too high then the clock throttle will kick in a force the CPU to run slower till it cools down or even shut the system down if things are really out of hand. You can run some benchmarks to determine if clock throttling is in effect at the load temp you have but unless that board is reading temps fairly low you have no worries since tests have shown 72c or so is where the clock throttling kicks in Here's an outstanding article on the topic that I recommend eveyone read. BTW that load temp would not be at all unusual for a stock Dell P4 system with a similar CPU and Dell wouldn't let that happen if it weren't capable of it

Under load I'm at 58c and idle I'm at 43c

I did on my system. I think I read somewhere that Abit raised the default warning to 90c in the latest bios update for the IC7.

btw, because of my experience with motherboards not giving temperature readings that make sense, I don't get too concerned about issues like this. I prefer to be very careful to properly assemble the HSF and have good case ventiliation, and rely more on how the system behaves than the reported temperature. At least in the early stages after building until I get a feel for what kind of numbers are being reported.

For instance if I know that everything is properly assembled and functioning correctly, I see what temps the motherboard reports at default settings. I then can use that number as a baseline for how temperatures change when overclocking.

So did you set it to exactly 75C or higher? At 2.7mhz and 1.575 Vcore, my temps went up by 10C in Prime95.

It had a couple small scrapes on it, that was probably the main problem
