Should I be worried that I have driven 500 miles over the 3,000 oil change mark ....

When I got my last oil change, they put a sticker on the top left of my windshield, but I've approximately driven more than 500 miles past the mileage I was supposed to bring the car in for an oil change. Is it ok to go 4,000 without an oil change?

I also need to get that SRS light fixed ...

No. Some people insist on 3000, others say 5000. It actually depends on your car, read your manual.

No. Depends on where you drive too. You'll be fine, just have it changed sometime soon.

Edit: meant to say, Yes, you are fine. Not, yes, worry about it.

As long as you have enough oil in there, I highly doubt any damage has happened. Just get it done.

I've gone 6-7k miles before changing my oil before; my manual actually recommends 7.5k intervals. I don't know the specifics of your particular car, but I think it's been fairly frequently spouted that 3k is on the very safe/conservative side in terms of oil change mileage.

Just drive back to the 3,000 mile mark and find a lube shop.

I've got a buddy who drives an 83 chevy van with 300k miles on it and he changes the oil every 15,000 miles wether it needs it or not:)

202,000 miles on my car, and I don't think I've made a 3,000 mile oil change yet.. usually closer to 4k

Definitely depends on the car (mine is 5,000 miles with Mobil1 synthetic, and I've stretched it farther- don't try that with regular dino oil). Though 500 miles over isn't going to kill your engine, you need to take care of it ASAP if your manual or dealership recommends 3,000 mile intervals. Really, ASAP.

We do 5,000 in the gasoline vehicles at work, and 10,000 in diesel.

I do about 4,000 in my own car.

I have driven 7,000 miles since my last oil change. I'll change the oil once my car hits the 100K mark which is only 2,500 miles away. I love marketing.

They tried that in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and hilarity ensued.

Our cars have oil-life monitors. Are those monitors dependable?

With previous cars, I changed oil 2x year, about 6K-7K mile intervals. I think the 3000 mile interval is a myth propagated by lube shops and motor oil sellers.

Unrefined, archaic, yet tough motors do not make a high quality car on their own. :)

In automotive circles, we refer to those as 'idiot lights'. I would not depend on them- use common sense and do your maintenance when it's supposed to be done, not when your car tells you. If anything, it's cheap insurance. I'm sure I could stretch my Mobil1 synthetic beyond 10,000 miles, but my engine is expensive to replace and I don't want to bet that - the heart of my car - to try and prove something. While it would be cool and interesting, it's just not worth it for me.

I see. FWIW, it's not just a light. It expresses a percentage of 'life' that's left and supposedly reflects the type of driving and driving conditions. Right now, one of the cars is at 20%--Oil change this weekend.
