Should I be concerned about installing MS .net ?

When I run windows update it always is suggesting I install .net stuff. I don't like the idea of any unnescessary MS stuff, so have not installed it. I just installed Nasa World Wind, and despite it saying it optionally uses .net, in fact it won't run without managed Directx, which apparently won't install without .net.

Should I just go ahead and install .net on my XP pro system?

Linux is looking better every day.

Yes, it is like the Microsoft JVM(Java), but for the .NET family of languages

Yes, many things will soon require it. It doesn't hurt performance and it doesn't make you more susceptible to viruses, so no worries.

Go ahead and install it, it doesn't seem to hurt. Just be aware that if you're the only user and it normally boots straight to your desktop, installing .net will make you log in each time you start up or interrupt the screen saver. Follow Microsoft's instructions to change back to autologon.

ATI's new catalyst CP requires it (you can still use the old, non-.NET one but that will change).

Nvidia is making .NET driver
YOU HAVE TO SWITCH you driver development to .NET if you want to prepare for Longhorn. ATI was criticised for its new Catalyst Control Center since apart from nice looking features its new driver brought slower execution. But we've learned that Nvidia is doing the same at the moment.

It's not that ATI just wanted to make an adventurous move - it's actually something that all graphic card manufactures will have to do sooner or late
the move is ultimately inevitable.

but not now ;)

Not all of the software I want tu use runs under OS/2.

Its not like I have just one PC, I collect computers and have half a dozen on or near this desk, with just about any OS you can think of running someplace around the house.

Sorry, I was just being snarky :). I have 9 machines running at my home too, and only 1 runs Windows because I want to play games. It's better to just deal with it than to complain about it :D.

The .Net library is an inclusive library that in part replaces what use to be the Visual Basic (VB) Run Libraries.

If the VB run lib. Did Not bother you .net should not either.

P.S.

In the every one liked the Huge American cars with the Big Fins.

Then came the Love for Made in Japan cars.

Heck in the Seventies they even bought Yugos.

Now it is Trucks and SUVs Brother.

Wow in the late seventies you where not a person if you did not like Apple+ computer.

Then it was only IBM PC

Then Compaq

Now Dell.

It is OK to be Fashionable, but why is the need to rationalized Fashion as though it is the ultimate truth.

Yeah the software until needs the .net lib. It has nothing do to with drivers or any thing else related to the Hardware.

I still have my Apple II computer, and I am not sure if I am really ready to make the move to the II+. What kind of future can this basic really have, plus I have some concerns with this upstart company Micro something taking control of Basic. Why can't they stick with cp/m?

Of course "I" don't need it, likely nobody "needs" it, but MicroSlop convinced a lot of programmers that they need it, so the internet has one more speed bump. I can hardly wait to see what new virii come along with it.

I installed .Net for the Catalyst CP thingy. Since then I've noticed some odd glitches on occassion, mostly when using Windows Explorer. Windows Explorer seems to enter lala land sometimes, often taking 5-6 seconds to complete something that usually is instantaneous. I should probably take the time to Install SP2, that might have something to do with it.

I have to keep explorer around for windows update, but I don't use it at all after trying Firefox for anything else.

SP2 I guess is essential, but it is NOT friendly.

I use Mozilla for Internet, Windows Explorer for File Management. ;)

Hmmm

I navigate to that location in regedit and a Dword value called ASPNET is already there.

So what to do ?
