Should I backorder the Opteron 165 at Monarch?

Well turns out I probably won't be building my new rig until early December anyway. I was thinking about ordering the 170, but I would like the save the $90 and there wouldn't really be any point in getting the 170 BUT... I have heard that some people expect the next batch of Opterons to not OC very well... So any thoughts on this? I know that no one really knows for sure, but does any one have any input? Is it worth it to spend $90 more now and have better chances of a good OC or buy later... BTW I won't really care if I can't get 2.8GHZ or whatever, if I can hit 2.4 I would be happy and 2.5 would be great.

2.4/2.5GHz seems to be easily attainable even with the Opterons with "lesser" overclocking ability. I would be pretty surprised if the 165's that show up in a few weeks can't hit at least 2.4. Since you won't be building for a few weeks anyway, and since you want to save the money, I'd say you might as well wait and get a 165 (or backorder now, like you said).

Yeah pretty sure that's what I am going to do. Will probably order the Opteron now though since pretty soon even the backorders will be filled up. Thanks for the advice.

Yep I backordered it, and I don't mind waiting. Anyone have a feeling AMD is going to severly nerf the overclocking potential of these chips though? I sure hope not...
