Should I avoid the cheaper tire places?

I've been having some problems trying to find time to get my new tires installed on my Audi TT at my usual place due to their limited hours and my crazy schedule. I've always been a bit leery about going to a place like Discount Tire\Belle Tire as they seem like they may be just trying to cycle through as many people as possible. Am I just being paranoid? Tires are a little under 4/32.

There's nothing wrong with Discount Tire (or their other name, America's Tire). They are a major, nationwide company and handled both my Mustang GT and Viper without issue.

Discount tire is not a good place. They up sell you even if you don't need a tire. I had a tire they said that I need replacement and non repairable. I repaired it myself and that was 2 years ago.

I've had no complaints with America's Tire Co. I used to go there exclusively but now I patronize another mom & pop shop since I can get my alignment done there as well. Not cheap but they do good work.

They very well may have been right and you very well may have been lucky. Who is to say really. There are simply some repairs that should be made and some that should not. Anything that falls on the side of should not a major company will NOT do.

Should they repair what they said was non-repairable, and later that tire shreds and causes an emergency situation, they would likely be liable for the damages. I'd suspect they are liable for injuries as well, which could prove to be majorly expensive, especially if a fatality occurs.

That being said, that's not to say they didn't try to pull one over on you, but they are by and large a great company and I doubt you'd sway any of their fans over your experience.

I've had Tires Plus (2 different shops in Minneapolis, about 5 years apart) strip studs on my car due to cross threading the things and running them on with an impact. One of those times I drove out of the lot, felt my wheel literally wobbling from being loose, and turned right back into the lot on the other side. Not sure how they parked the car without feeling it. Ont he upside, they kept the car overnight and repaired it and gave me a ride home, but of course it shouldn't have been needed to start with.

Ever since the 2nd event I've loaded up my wheels and brought them to better shops, even if it means I have to drop them off. I'm lucky enough to have 2 sets of wheels and a 2nd car to haul them in, so this may not be an option for you whatsoever. If it is, I highly recommend it. If not - I'm sure you'd be safe, I'm sure 90+% (maybe even 99+%) of the time the work is perfect, but having been burned twice I stopped going to them.

They have to worry about the liability issues associated with repairing a tire which more than likely drove their decision to give you the advice they gave you. I have plugged tires that should not have been plugged myself. I assumed the liability in those cases.

I don't keep cars long enough to need tires, but I have had to replace a few due to unrepairable damage in the past. Discount Tire treated me just fine.

I have never had a problem with using Discount Tire. Helps that they are close to nationwide.

I have gotten tires/work done in one state and the warranty/support is honored in another.

Wow, amazing we're mostly in agreement about something. 😀😛

I feel like stopping what I'm doing and writing down how I feel... oh wait, I guess I just did that. 😛

I've been using discount tire for a few years. The only issue I have is that they don't have access to the as extensive a selection of tires as Tire Rack does. This is a particular issue when shopping for extreme performance (i.e. barely street legal) Auto-x tires or even R-Comps.

But, the nice thing is they'll install anything you bring in. So I buy from Tire Rack and get DT to install. No questions asked, just service with a smile. 😛

Do their employees get paid on sales commission or are they fixed pay? Cos they've never pushed me to buy tires from them. Unlike other tire shops.

Wow look how boring a thread is when everyone agrees lol....

I don't have any problem with disco tire either, but I do try to find locally owned joints when I can if they are competent. Have to order tires in as they can't usually manage the discount from a place like, well, discount tire. But I prefer being able to hang out in the shop with the guy doing the work and BS with him rather than a waiting room like a girl. 🙂

youre all idiots! your discount tires are going too fail on you and you will die!

there, that make you feel better?

i end up using discount tire more than anything just based on price. my company has an account with them for our fleet, so we get some decent pricing for our personal vehicles as a side benefit. i
