Should I allow the dish?

One of my tenants wants to get a DirectTV dish installed

My options are to allow it on the roof or on a pole, allow it just on a pole, or for me to not allow it at all. The issues are possible damage to the roof or my pole and the unsightliness of a dish.

What do you guys think?

personally i don't think a dish looks all that bad...not like its a car on blocks in the front yard...i wouldnt allow it on the roof...but whats the worst it can do to the pole...a few drilled mounting holes?

On a pole only. There will be penetrations to ge the wire in the home, but those arn't really an issue.

I'd probably let them. I hardly notice dishes on houses. The only ones that look bad are the houses with 3 or 4 dishes.

I would allow it in the least conspicuous place. The side of the house is usually best. Which side of the house faces south?

Sure, they (my tenants) can have a dish installed. I would totally prefer it on a pole rather than on the roof. If there's no way around sticking it on the roof, I would want it to be non-penetrating and hidden as much as possible from the view of the street. Also, give me a call if you have to go the roof route or if you have any questions otherwise.

Other than a drainage pipe, I don't think any poles exist at this point. I'm guessing they would have to install their own pole

Yeah, I've conceded to that fact...I would like to keep holes out of the roof though.

Hmm...this would be the first tenant to have a dish. It becomes an issue because I myself am thinking about getting a dish to replace my $60+ digital cable...

Would it be better if you got it installed yourself, and gave bill to tennants? that way you would have quality control

I'm thinking about having my property manager present while it's being installed. He's usually pretty good at understanding my concerns

OK, then have them put the dish on the west side of the house facing south-west.

The side of the house is, IMO, the best place to install a dish.

Just FYI, you can't prevent them from putting a dish up. The FCC ruled that a landlord can't prevent a tenant from putting up a dish as long as it is smaller than 1 meter.

Eventhough the FCC ruled on it, the landlord can still dictate where it goes. Directv also wants to ensure the landlords know about it in general.
