Should I add 1 or 2gb of memory to my Dell 1420?

I have a dual core 1.73 Dell 1420 running Windows XP--and do a lot of basic work stuff on here, with mainly Excel being my memory hog.

Overall it's pretty smooth, but I do notice some slow downs at times, and am looking to add some memory to my current 1gb configuration.

Would going to 3gb be overkill for my pretty basic needs over 2, especially since I'm running XP--or is the cost so low ($20-$30) that I should go for 3gb anyway?

Every machine today, regardless of OS (linux, solaris, windows), would benefit from 4GB, and should not be running under 2GB.

Ofcourse, if your OS is windows 32bit then you can also see about ~3.3GB, so getting 3GB to begin with is acceptable as well.

Before buying a 2GB stick, make sure your motherboard/BIOS can use it. Alot of older, even slightly older, laptops can't.
