institutions that will not perform same sex marriages are sued on account of the fact that they have a non tax place of worship status and will lose said status....

is this right if it does happen? should certain religions or churches be punished compared to those that will perform same sex marriages as basically that is what it will come down to...

just heard this on the radio and it was something I never considered but could see happening.

Thanks

Sounds like FUD. No, Religious Institutions should not be forced to Marry people for any reason.

It is FUD. Churches can marry or not marry anyone they want to. And people can already sue anyone for anything as things are now. Whether the federal government recognizes gay marriage or not is not going to change either of these things.

right, but we are not talking about that per say, but rather their tax exempt status...which they could stand to lose compared with other churches that recognize homo marriage.

this qualifies as the WORST argument ever.

so, BECAUSE of the separation of church and state idea, we allow gays to marry and then BECAUSE churches don't marry them, the government comes in and FORCES churches to do so??

WAIT, if that's the case, YTF isn't the government FORCING integration of races IN CHURCH ALSO??

OH WAIT, because of that STUPID FVCKING SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE RIGHT??

Try again junior.

Good, the boy scouts got approval to practice bigotry in hiring and are now being removed from places that are supported by tax dollars because the sates have laws not to deal with bigots. Sort of the wages of sin, right?

Think of all the wars churches have got us into. War breaks out between churches 10 times more often than among kennel clubs

it will be a tough suit via sep of church and state and the first amendment...

but the Catholic Church v. the Pill just finished, so who knows

then again, signing a marriage lisence and actually leading a wedding are two diff things, so the churches might just get away with the former

PLatinum, again try reading and comprehending the post first....this is only about Tax exemption status, it would not force the church (or any religious institiution) to do anything, but rather punish them for not....
labrat brought up a good point with re. to the judgement against them for the pill....

the fact that churches still get tax breaks shows that the lines of seperation of church and state are still quite blurry, or at least that is an argument that could be used....

not an argument I am trying to make per say, but something I could see happening, or at least being brought to trial.

Why should any churches be tax exempt? Was this ever decided in court or is it just a long-standing tradition?

Churches are generally non-profit, hence they are usually tax-exempt.
