Yea. If it wasn't, all the lazy people would be fatter than they already are.

yes. kids are getting grossly overweight. I'm beginning to think mandatory boot camp for high-school freshmen wouldn't be a bad idea.

No because once they get out of school they are going to go back and sit on their asses and get fat again. There are fat chicks in my class which will never get any skinner and they don't even try and PE is a waste of my time. I already excersise and work-out.

Definatly. Its required that it be taken (well its a combined gym/wellness thing) for a full quarter each of the 4 years in our high school.

I wish also that schools be required to have "sports" days, where basically the school takes the day off and lets its kids play sports. Where else would you be able to get a massive ultimate frisbee game together, and even better one with your fellow peers in your school? (we actually kind of do this at the very end of the year. For the last few days school each year the school has a half day where the first half is finals and the second half we play sports, like basketball or ultimate frisbee. Those games are the best :D )

good for u urbantechie :)

but u must realise that there are people like me out there.
i like a good game of soccer or basketball anytime.
or even a swim or a jog.

BUT i'm too damn lazy to do it unless some of my friends ask me along OR there's PE and i HAVE to go. :p

I know it's not solving the real solution (my laziness) but i like PE. It gives me a reason to run around even though i'm fat. otherwise when i run around i get looked at or laughed at a lot. :p

Heh, besides without gym class, would you have loved to exercise as much as u do now? Did it have anything to do with that? maybe deep down, gym class further enhanced your love of exercise....

Nope, it shouldn't. I can speak for myself when I say that in my gym/PE classes half the people just stand in one spot pretending to play volleyball. Now there's a workout. As for me, I already play football, track and field, and weightlift for my school. What the heck to I need gym for? I could really use another study hall, or even let me schedule a class.

I think it should be mandatory as long as you aren't in another sport. If you are in another sport, then you should be automatically exempt from it and allowed a study hall period.

football, track, and weights would already count as PE if you're doing it for school. unless your school is really different from how mine was. i think it should. when i went from PE in 8th grade to band being my PE class in high school i gained a bit of weight that i'm now trying to work off.

Yes NA are a bunch of lazy asses as it is. Yes some people will stand around and pretend that they are doing something but most will participate. If at least 25% of the people get something out of it then I say its worth it. I do like vi_edits suggestion that if you can prove that you are actively involved in another sport that you be exempt if you choose.

ElFenix, at you're school extracurricular sports count as PE so that you don't have to take gym? Mine don't. Lucky you. Gym class is a big waste of time in my school.

i think that broader ranges of phys ed should be taught not just unit after unit of basketball, volleyball etc.
in grades 10-12 i took "live fit" where we did areobics, yoga etc. and talked about life/nutirtion management. not only was it fun but i got in really good shape.
but i also took normal gym too cuz i like to kick ass!

but OAC gym was all theory (like kinesiology and stuff) :(

yeah at first having an entire morning of phys-ed is tiring but after awhile it is sooooooo much fun.

*kat. <-- likes doing things.

Oh please.

In high school, I was an avid roller skater and I rode my ten speed every where I went. I look back at pics of myself and I am amazed because I thought I was hugely fat but I was long and lean with a nice bust, too.

Dressing out for PE was torture. The guys harrassed us constantly. In the FLorida sun, running the track was likely to lead to heat stroke.

I got harrassed so much in gym that I quit going. I would run the track and guys would jog backwards in front of me so they could watch my breasts jiggle. It was humiliating. The coaches never did a damn thing about it.

Sure, PE can be mandatory, but it should be totally segregated!!!!! I hated it with a passion, and I am a very athletic person. Also, people should be graded fairly... I have great strength and endurance but horrible hand/eye coordination due to my visual handicap. I can't play tennis, golf, or anything that involves a small ball very well. I can jog long distances, lift weights, cycle, swim, skate, etc. It wasn't fair to grade me on stuff that I had to struggle to do because I couldn't see!

Can anyone tell I am still twitching? :D

I dunno. I always loved pe but in my senior year of hs i had so many courses i had to take there was no room. IT should be mandatory at least until grade ten.

PE is mandatory here. According to a teacher its due to the fact they can get 150 kids out of the building every hour = less overcrowding. Seems logical seeing as my school was built for 2300 kids or something and they squished in 3100.

PE is manditory in the schools here. I was one of the fat kids when I was in school yet I still looked forward to PE. Why? It's one place where I could play different sports with others who were generally as bad or worse than myself. :)

I think if anything they should extend the class periods for PE. It sucks to only be able to have 20-30 minutes of "play time" in a 50 minute period of class time because of all the other crap. (dressing, attendence, equipment setup, etc)

In HS we were able to pick what we wanted to do for half a quarter. Since we usually had 3 or 4 separate PE classes going on a the same time that was possible. That way you could do what you like and not get stuck doing things you hated. I did LOTS of roller skating, indoor soccer and floor hockey. :)

Also, there should be more time for physical fitness courses, nutrition, stuff like that. Not just sports.

In my HS gym isn't madatory, however, we have a class called 'PAL' (physically active lifestyle) which is. It's pretty well the same as gym except we play dodgeball, and games like that.

Especially today, Physical Education is all about being able to dodge bullets.

PE useful? What do you think?

(I'm glad I attended school in the days when the greatest danger was not passing a test.)

Yes... PE is physical education, not physical exercise. It exposes people to a lot of sports they ordinarily wouldn't be able to play (pickleball, anyone?) and maybe gets them interested, as well as teaching the proper rules of the game. If it's done properly, it also teaches proper exercise fundamentals, such as warm-ups and stretching. It was the only way I learned how to lift properly (avoid injuries). PE at my hs was totally segregated, and the women even did different units (aerobics and self defense while the guys did wrestling). Although I know a lot of people know who say "PE was terrible, I got made fun of because I wasn't good enough," I never knew anyone who didn't realize the benefits of exercise after they took it. In my experience, the people who got made fun of also eventually just got over it and accepted that they weren't as good at sports, ie they learned to take deconstructive criticism with a grain of salt.

i FVCKING hated PE with a passion. I am not a physical person, so what the fsck did it look like for me to play basketball of baseball. fsck that sh-t!

As you can see, taking PE back in my HS years, left serious emotional scars.
