They are firsts among equals. Along with the additional benefits and privileges, they should also be held to a higher level of responsibility.

I completely disagree. They are ordinary citizens who have been given the honor, by their constituents, of representing their constituents and their interests in matters of government and legislation.
I see in no way how this makes them superior to anyone. They are of the people, not above the people.

If you exclude congresspeople from going through security checkpoints, it will only be a matter of time until a fake congressperson (possibly armed) will get through.

Also, just because someone is elected to congress, that doesn't erase his previous life. After all a lot of convicted felons have and are serving in congress.
