Should Cell Phone Jamming be Legal?

I want to be able to receive urgent phone calls in theaters and restaurants. And nothing wrong with texting in a restaurant or other quiet place.

We don't need jammers, people just need to stop being assholes and not talk in quiet places.

yes, but assholes may think it's OK...they may think talking to a friend about a game that just went on, or whatever gossip might be OK to them, but not you or me....there asshole levels differ.
 
For businesses or your average Joe, absolutely not. I don't understand why police aren't allowed to use them, though.

yes, but assholes may think it's OK...they may think talking to a friend about a game that just went on, or whatever gossip might be OK to them, but not you or me....there asshole levels differ.

Then quiet places need no talking on phone policies. If you are talking on a phone, a waiter (or someone) will come over and tell you to quit. Give it a few years and it would become part of our culture to not talk in quiet places.

there is no reason or purpose for a civilian to have a jammer and there is too much potential for illegal uses
 
Jails and prisons? Hell Yes. From the story:
"Last year, prison officials in California alone confiscated 2,800 cell phones."

That by itself should be enough to permit the use of jammers by such facilities.


As for restaurants and theaters...I'd LOVE to see those places enable jammers as well...just because so many ig-nant people insist on being ass-hats about their cell phone usage in those kinds of places...but it'll never happen, and (sigh) for very good reasons. Needing to make a GENUINE emergency phone call, such as a medical emergency, or even to receive such an emergency call will prevent jamming from happening in public places...BUT, (as was already mentioned) waiters and movie ushers should be issued cattle prods for use when some moron is blabbing away about the chick he met, the score of the big game, how her boyfriend dumped her, etc.
Save those kinds of calls for later...(don't hold your breath though...it's usually the same idiots who you see trying to text while they drive.
 
..they're already here. small portable jobies you can run on batteries for local area jam. takes very little to jam out a cell phone.
 
Jam - no. Block - yes. I'd be fine with jamming if you could confine it to your private property. There is a building material similar to plywood that can be used as the sheathing on the exterior walls of a building; it blocks the signals from passing through the walls, and as far as I know it's legal in the US. I support the rights of private property owners to prevent the use of cell phones using this legal method.

Restaurant and theater owners can install materials that create a Faraday shield. And I can step outside if I need to make a "emergency" call. Since I am not a doctor,fireman, or police. I can't think of many calls that I can't wait 90 minutes to receive.

Exactly. It would actually help criminals A LOT if they could easily get cell phone jammers. It's much easier to rob a bank when no one can text for help.

You cannot use active means to block a signal.
You can use any building materials you want to.
Their is wallpaper and I believe window tint also to block radio signals.
It is designed for security buildings.


 
You can jam them in places where it's a security or health risk, so if that delicate piece of equipment in ER doesn't like cell phones, go ahead. Otherwise, illegal to jam, perfectly legal to tell the user to leave the theater/restaurant/et cetera.
